The similarities and differences in political, economic, and social histories between northern and southern Vietnam provide a compelling setting to investigate the impact of socialist policies and the recent shift from a centrally planned to a market economy on gender stratification in the domestic spheres. We assess determinants of the gender division of household labor among three marriage cohorts that underwent early marital years during 1) the Vietnam War and mass mobilization, 2) nationwide socialist collectivization and economic stagnation, and 3) market reform. We find that Vietnamese wives still do the vast majority of housework. In this sense, government efforts to change gender roles apparently have had at most limited success. Vietnamese husbands in the most recent marriage cohort, however, are more invo...

We use the crash of technology stocks in March 2000 to show that two groups of VC firms (winners and losers) adopt differentiated strategies in contrasting competitive situations (before and after the crash). To solve the problem of the clustering of VC funds within firms, we use a methodology of multilevel models to test our hypotheses.

WSNs play a central role in the Internet of Things (IoT) vision. IoT is a new paradigm that aims to integrate and connect anything at anytime, anyplace, with anything and by anyone. However, addressing objects is the main challenge for IoT. IPv6 over Low power Wireless Personal Area Networks (6LoWPAN) has been introduced to cope with this issue. The emerging paradigm Social web of thing (SWoT) enables users to manage, access, share, and integrate smart objects with Social Network Site (SNS). This paper investigates different SWoT platforms and architectures, provides an overview of the current state-of-the-art on WSN communication standards.

Research paper thumbnail of Motives and Effects of Syndication Strategy in French Venture Capital Deals

SSRN Electronic Journal, 2011

In this paper, we investigate the strategy of french venture capital firms concerning syndication... more In this paper, we investigate the strategy of french venture capital firms concerning syndication, and the factors of syndicating, from a data set of 1789 VC investments. The limited available evidence suggests that venture capital syndicated deals are generally big and are driven by industry characteristics. We show that sharing risk and increasing portfolio diversification is a more important motive for syndication than accessing to additional intangible resources and skill or limiting potential competition. The amount of the financing round has a positive impact on the probability of syndication. We did not find any link between the type of owners of venture capital firms and their propensity to co-invest. Our data suggest that syndication is associated with decreasing performance of companies in the VC firms investment portfolio, measured by the return on capital employed and the ratio of Conan-Holder. The social impact of syndication is not highlighted in the short term as the employment does not increase in companies financed by syndicated investors.

A simple application is to approximate the definite integral b a f (x) dx if the function f is convex. In this short note, we show how to relax the convexity property of the function f , and thus we obtain inequalities that involve a larger class of functions. This new study also raises some open questions. b a f (x) dx. These inequalities have many extensions and generalizations, see [1, 2, 7 9]. In this paper we present some new refinements of inequalities (1) and (2).

To achieve precision positioning for the follow-up scanning and high-speed measurement, in this paper, mathematical modeling and control of the probe is focused to avoid the damage incurred by the collision between the probe and the sample and to obtain the high measurement in the scanning step. The Hamilton’s principle is firstly employed to derive the equation of motion and its boundary conditions. Next, the summation method, Lagrangian equation and Laplace transform are applied to obtain natural frequencies, a dynamic model of the AFM probe, and to work out the transfer function of the open-loop system. The proposed model is compared with two conventional AFM probe models: point–mass model and conventional cantilever beam model - where one of the ends of the cantilever and basic platform are assumed to be fixed. Contrary to most existing works on cemented or grouted sands, which rely on a macroscopic framework to identify the behaviour of such composite granular media from macroscopic triaxial tests, a multiscale modelling approach is retained in the present work based on the homogenisation method of periodic media. The first part of the work is dedicated to the study of the effect of the elastic characteristics of the constituents and of the grout saturation within the void space on the elastic behaviour of the grouted sand. The second part addresses the non-linear behaviour of the equivalent material by taking into account the damage behaviour of the grout.

Individual- and household-level risk factors for transmission were investigated. Nine persons with serological evidence of SARS infection were identified amongst 212 close contacts of 45 laboratory- confirmed SARS cases (secondary attack rate 4·2%, 95% CI 1·5–7). In this cohort, the average number of secondary infections caused by a single infectious case was 0·2. Two community contacts with laboratory evidence of SARS coronavirus infection had mild or sub-clinical infection, representing 3% (2/65) of Vietnamese SARS cases. There was no evidence of transmission of infection before symptom onset. Then any element in Ᏹ'(‫ޒ‬ n) is a compactly sup ported distribution, and vice versa. Consider a com pact set K in ‫ޒ‬ n. Let us try to construct all elements of the subspace Ᏹ'(K) of distributions supported on K. This case differs from the case of ‫ޒ(‬ n) = L q ‫ޒ(‬ n) 1 ≤ p < ∞, + = 1 , in which we can specify any ele ment of the dual space as an element of L q ‫ޒ(‬ n); it is impossible to directly define all elements of Ᏹ'(‫ޒ‬ n), because, generally, these are generalized functions. The Paley-Wiener theorem relates growth properties of entire functions on ‫ރ‬ n to Fourier transforms of dis tributions in Ᏹ'(K). The importance of the Paley-Wiener theorem consists in that it makes it possible to construct all elements of Ᏹ'(K). This theorem and its versions were studied by many authors (see, e.g., [1-15]). In this paper, we describe the Fourier image of the space Ᏹ'(K), where K is any compact set, and apply this result to construct all elements of Ᏹ'(K).
