Please visit www.emeraldinsight.com/authors for more information. About Emerald www.emeraldinsight.com Emerald is a global publisher linking research and practice to the benefit of society. The company manages a portfolio of more than 290 journals and over 2,350 books and book series volumes, as well as providing an extensive range of online products and additional customer resources and services. Emerald is both COUNTER 4 and TRANSFER compliant. The organization is a partner of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) and also works with Portico and the LOCKSS initiative for digital archive preservation. Abstract Purpose-The role of managerial assumptions in the formulation of organizational strategies has been well recognized by previous studies, yet in marketing literature, the effect of such imperative on marketing practice choice tends to be ignored. Therefore, this paper aims to empirically investigate how management assumptions fit with the choice of marketing practices, and how such fit affects performance. Design/methodology/approach-A model is developed and tested using survey methodology, and the data are analyzed using the partial least square (PLS) approach. Findings-The results show that different marketing practices were coupled with different frames of reference, resulting in viable matching profiles. Research limitations/implications-Given the novelty of the approach adopted in this study, conclusions about association and not causation are drawn. In addition, the study is restricted to Qatar which may reduce the generalizability of its findings and conclusions. Practical implications-The findings will help managers to examine carefully the internal logic of their marketing-related profiling, where coherent variables will enhance performance. Originality/value-To one's knowledge, this paper reports a work in an area not previously researched. In addition, this study is one of the rare papers that examines unobserved heterogeneity using the PLS-structural equation modeling (SEM) in the field of marketing.

Our literature review organizes the existing literature on contextual factors along the lines of an integrative framework for studying strategic decisions. Interestingly however, the stream of research on strategic decision processes is dominated by studies showing mixed, contradictory and inconclusive findings. The effects of each contextual factor on the strategic decision process differ substantially across the reviewed studies. This creates several opportunities for further research on the topic. The review also reveals a paucity of cross-cultural studies, longitudinal studies, and tests of complex relationships such as three-way interactions, curvilinear relationships, and mediation effects. We conclude our review by suggesting seven directions for future research and identifying several implications for theory and practice.

In order to extend prior research, this study reconciles upper echelons theory with broadenand-build theory and the work of the positive organizational behavior movement to investigate the antecedents and effects of constructive politics. It explores how different aspects of diversity influence constructive politics and the extent to which the latter contribute to decision performance, namely, decision success and decision pace. Data were drawn from 200 survey respondents in Dubai. The results not only supported the role of constructive politics in decision performance, but also revealed support for the role of demographic and competency diversity on constructive politics. The current research contributes to the exploration of constructive politics in decision-making and raises additional questions in an attempt to supply, with related research, significant missing portions of the political behavior story.

However, although many studies have found that success of an area's tourist development depends crucially on its image, most of studies concentrate on only a few destinations in the United States and the European Union, neglecting most emerging tourist destinations such as these in fuel-exporting countries. In order to fill this gap, this study adopted a two-stage design seeking to develop and test a scale of Perceived City Image (PCI) in a non-western context. In Stage 1, the authors; through a qualitative study, generated and refined the scale elements, recognizing unique characteristics of Al-Ain. In Stage 2, the scale, through a quantitative study, has been assessed in terms of dimensionality, validity, and reliability. The overall results reflect appropriateness of the proposed constructs and provide an integrated perspective of PCI constructs in the Arab Middle East, where very little research can be found. Results, contributions, limitations, directions for future research, and managerial implications are all discussed.

Stakeholders' pressure motivates the deployment of systems of environmental management control. N... more Stakeholders' pressure motivates the deployment of systems of environmental management control. Nevertheless, few insights are available regarding the impact of stakeholders' pressure on the extent to which eco-control systems are used. Findings from previous research on eco-control are said to be inconclusive, due to the lack of empirical evidence. In addition, the literature on hotels/tourism indicates a scarcity of studies investigating the factors associated with the use of these systems in the hotel sector. In this study, to help fill this gap, we contribute to the existing literature. We investigate, empirically, the associations between the impact of stakeholders' pressure and the use of eco-control systems, and whether the extent of using these systems is associated with hotel performance in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Our findings conclude that the impact of stakeholders' pressure influences the extent of using eco-control systems in UAE hotels. However, contrary to expectations, the extent of using these systems is not significantly associated with hotel performance. Our findings and interpretations could reflect 'practice variation' in the adoption of eco-control systems in UAE hotels. It could be that UAE hotels do not capitalize on the implications the adoption of these systems could have on their performance. The academic and practical implications of our findings are discussed.

Based on 143 online survey responses from senior administrators across Canadian public organizations , the study found that SPM of efficiency and effectiveness are positively associated with performance, as well as, the former with both strategy implementation and strategy assessment decisions. The study extends prior research by linking both SPM and their use in strategic decision-making to organizational performance.

This study aims to help fill this gap by exploring the antecedents and consequences of the comprehensiveness of strategic plan implementation. Out of 500 questionnaires, 231 usable ones were collected from United Arab Emirates (UAE) public organizations. We find that our three factors of strategy formulation, namely, adoption of intended mode of strategy, enhancing employees' participation, and minimizing political behavior significantly influence the comprehensiveness of strategic plan implementation, which in turn has a significant positive impact on the effectiveness of strategic planning. We discuss our empirical results, the potential influence of culture, implications for both theory and practice, the limitations of the research and several avenues for future study.

Design/methodology/approach – Data were collected through a survey of 143 managers of Canadian public organizations. Findings – The findings indicate that two SPMS components, namely, the importance of non-financial performance measures and the use of operational efficiency measures, have significant positive associations with performance information use for strategy implementation and strategy assessment decisions. The extent to which SPMS models were used is found to be positively associated with performance information use for strategy implementation, but not for strategy assessment, decisions. Furthermore, the relationships between SPMS variables and strategic decision making are moderated by information systems/data limitations and management's commitment to attaining strategic goals. Managerial skills acquired through training or experience with SPMS also contribute positively to such relationships. Research limitations/implications – The results are affected by limitations associated with the survey method used. Practical implications – The findings could be useful for supporting public policy, strategic decision making, public service improvement, operational efficiency, and effectiveness. Originality/value – The study contributes to public management and performance measurement literature by investigating multiple determinants of performance information use in a cross-section of Canadian public organizations.

This study seeks to supply what is absent by examining the overall impact of combinations of variables representing three different perspectives (decision, environment and firm) on the use of intuition when making strategic decisions. The results indicate that the characteristics specific to the firm and to the environment appear to be more significant to intuition than does the nature of the decision; and that the impact of the contextual variables varies from one dimension to another. The research limitations are discussed and suggestions for future research are also offered.

Whereas political behaviour in strategic decision-making (SDM) has received sustained interest in the literature, empirical examination of its antecedents has been meagre. Design/methodology/approach -The authors conducted a constructive replication to examine the impact of three layers of context, namely, decision, firm and environment, on political behaviour. In Study 1, Greece, we gathered data on 143 strategic decisions, while in Study 2, Egypt, we collected data on 169 strategic decisions. Findings -The evidence suggests that both decision-specific and firm factors act as antecedents to political behaviour, while environmental factors do not. Practical implications -The findings support enhanced practitioner education regarding political behaviour and provide practitioners with a place from which to start by identifying the factors which might influence the occurrence of political behaviour in SDM. Originality/value -The paper fills important gaps in the existing research on the influence of context on political behaviour and delineates interesting areas for further research.

directions that a rebalanced strategic management research agenda may take. Whereas organizational
politics have received sustained interest in the management literature, its conceptual and empirical
examination in the tourism industry has been meagre. This study contributes to fill this gap by analyzing
data from 175 four- and five-star hotels located in a less researched region, the Gulf Cooperation Council

negate the effectiveness of strategic planning by increasing organizational tensions. Drawing on political
and organizational perspectives, an interpretation of the results and policy implications are discussed.
The study also delineates interesting research avenues for further research on organizational politics in
the tourism industry.
