The usage of baker's yeast in the diets of rabbit on fattening performance and nutrient digestibility Summary: This investigation was carried out to determine the effects of diets containing different levels of baker's yeast as a substitute for soybean meal on fattening performance and nutrient digestibility in rabbits. In the experiment a total of 40 weaned New Zealand rabbits (20 female, 20 male) aged 35 days and weighing on average 700 g were used. They were divided into one control and three treatment groups each containing 10 rabbits (5 female, 5 male). Three cages were used for each group. Baker's yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) at the level of 2.5, 5.0 and 7.5% was added to the first, second and third experimental diets as a substitute of soybean meal, respectively. The experimental period lasted 5 weeks. The average values of weekly live weight gain for control group and experimental groups were 156.5, 158.9, 146.1 and 132.5 g, feed consumption values per one kg live weight gain were determined as 3.74, 3.86, 3.88 and 3.96 kg, respectively. The live weight gain was statistically lower (p<0.01) and feed consumption per one kg live weight gain was statistically higher (p<0.05) for the group fed the diet containing 7.5% baker's yeast than that of control group. The values of crude protein digestibility of groups fed diets containing 7.5% baker's yeast were found to be lower (p<0.01) than that of control group. However there were no statistically differences among the groups in the values of dry matter and organic matter digestibility of diets. Therefore, it is concluded that baker's yeast can be used at the level of 2.5% in the diets of fattening rabbits.

Denemede toplam 204 adet bir haftalık Japon bıldırcın civcivi (Coturnix coturnix Japonica) kullanılmıştır. Her biri 51 adet bıldırcın civcivi kapsayan 4 grup düzenlenmiştir. Normal (3000 kcal/kg) ve düşük (2700 kcal/kg) metabolize olabilir enerji düzeyine sahip karma yemlere 0 ve 100 mg/kg L-karnitin ilave edilmiş ve ham protein düzeyleri eşit olacak şekilde düzenlenmiştir. Deneme 5 hafta sürdürülmüştür. Normal enerji düzeyine sahip rasyona L-karnitin ilavesi ile bıldırcınlarda deneme sonu canlı ağırlık, toplam canlı ağırlık artışı, bir kg canlı ağırlık artışı için tüketilen yem miktarı ve karkas randımanı etkilenmemiş, fakat toplam yem tüketimi artmış (p<0.01), serum kolesterol düzeyi azalmıştır (p<0.01). Düşük enerjili rasyona L-karnitin ilavesinin ise bıldırcınlarda deneme sonu canlı ağırlığı arttırdığı (p<0.01), bir kg canlı ağırlık artışı için tüketilen yem miktarı (p<0.01), serum kolesterol (p<0.01) ve trigliserit (p<0.05) düzeylerini azalttığı bulunmuştur. Sonuç olarak düşük enerji düzeylerindeki rasyonlara L-karnitin ilavesinin Japon bıldırcınlarında performansı olumlu yönde etkilediği, serum kolesterol ve trigliserit düzeylerini düşürdüğü gözlenmiştir. Anahtar sözcükler: Besi performansı, bıldırcın, kan parametreleri, karnitin Effects of L-carnitine supplementation to the diets containing different levels of energy on performance and some blood parameters of quails Summary: This experiment was carried out to determine the effects of the usage of L-carnitine in diets with different levels of energy on some productive characteristics and blood parameters of Japanese quail. A total of 204 quail chicks aged one week (Coturnix coturnix Japonica) were used. They were divided into four groups each containing 51 quail chicks. Diets having normal (3000 kcal/kg) and low (2700 kcal/kg) metabolizable energy level were supplemented with 0 and 100 mg/kg L-carnitine. Diets were formulated to be isonitrogenic. The experimental period lasted five weeks. L-carnitine supplementation to the diets having normal energy level did not affect the live weight at the end of the experiment, total live weight gain, feed intake per one kg live weight gain and carcass yield but increased total feed intake (p<0.01) and decreased serum cholesterol level (p<0.01). The values of live weight at the end of the experiment were increased (p<0.01) and feed intake per one kg live weight gain (p<0.01), the serum levels of cholesterol (p<0.01) and triglyceride (p<0.05) were decreased by L-carnitine supplementation to the low energy diets. As a result, Lcarnitine supplementation to the diets of low energy level have positive effects on the performance and decrease the levels of serum cholesterol and triglycerides of Japanese quails.

In the experiment a total of 342 Japanese quails (Coturnix coturnix japonica) aged ten weeks were equally divided into six groups of 57 (three replicates of 19 quails each). Six levels (0, 4, 8, 12, 16 and 20%) of dried baker's yeast were included in isonitrogenous and isocaloric diets. The experimental period lasted 14 weeks. At the end of the experiment, there were no significant differences among the groups in body weight, feed intake, protein intake, egg production, feed efficiency, egg yolk index and egg haugh unit. Blood serum levels of total protein, triglyceride and cholesterol were not affected by dietary dried baker's yeast. Diets containing 4 and 8% of dried baker's yeast increased the egg weight significantly (p<0.01). The inclusion of dried baker's yeast at the level of 20% to the diets reduced egg shell thickness and egg albumen height. It is concluded that dried baker's yeast can be used up to 16% in the diets of laying quails without adverse effects on the measured parameters.
