In such MPSP, each aircraft turnaround process is a separate project and the ground service providers that perform the activities of the aircraft turnarounds are the resource managers. Aircraft and ground service providers at an airport are independent self-interested parties. We propose a heterogeneous multiagent system (MAS) in which aircraft and ground service providers are modelled as autonomous agents: project agents and resource agents, respectively. The projects agents make their scheduling decisions independently of each other, they negotiate with resource agents over the time slots and associated prices for performing the neccessary activities. In order to handle the project release uncertainty, we present an online scheduling scheme that reduces the risk of rescheduling by starting the scheduling process of a project when it is released. Online scheduling may ...

W... more This paper reflects our findings on the technological feasibility of a mobile service scenario. We will show that despite the scenario being quite ordinary for endusers, the required service support functionality is rather complex. The realisation hinges on intricate grounded contextual reasoning about location information, user profiles and other situational context information. In particular, existing engineering methods and state-of-the-art technologies very well enable, for example, timely warning of a sales manager, who is late for and on his way to a business meeting. Furthermore, such techniques readily enable recommending the ‘best’ alternative travel schemes such that he arrives in time for his meeting. We report on our findings with implementing a sophisticated location reasoner of such a commuter-assistant that ultimately aligns commuting and meeting preference schemes of the sales manager.
The distributed project scheduling problem is a distributed resource allocation problem extended ... more The distributed project scheduling problem is a distributed resource allocation problem extended with temporal constraints. Herein a project consists of a series of activities, the scarce resources are assigned to those activities at certain time windows such that all the activities are performed and certain objectives are optimized. In the past, methods from Operations Research (OR) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) were proposed to tackle this problem in a centralized manner. However, such centralized methods appear to be for many real-world applications impractical and infeasible due to the distribution of information, changes in willingness to cooperate and the decision autonomy of individual actors. Furthermore, long term schedules are likely to be invalidated by the dynamic changes in the environment. In this paper, we investigate this more dynamic problem in the context of Airport Ground Handling (AGH), where airlines and ground handlers are working together to deliver ground ...
