It locates Abuja, the growing capital city of Nigeria as a case, arguing that like most other things, news sources are usually constructed affairs. Rather than being an absolute affair, a news source is a creation of intermixing variables, which grow over time and space; and which can increase or decline in the performance of this role, with changes in circumstances. The paper evaluates the growth of Abuja as a prime news centre from the time it was named as a future capital, up to the time a definite date of relocation was announced, and from when it became the seat of presidential leadership, to present date. While the paper reviews the value of the city as a veritable source of stories for the local and international media, it notes the different tendencies of the news reports. This is in the sense that while many are regular and heartening, various others rightly reflect the perversions in the land. In this case, another kind of balancing in news reporting is implicated: one that focuses on the good and the bad (not just the other side, whether good or bad) even without a deliberate attempt at doing so. The city produces more than enough good, and then a corresponding mess to balance up the former, in a back and forth approach, in what is symptomatic of an unbiased reporting of a news centre.

With growing online facilities for information dissemination, interaction, networking and knowledge sharing, there has been a corresponding, or even greater increase in the population of those managing these information. The result is the gradual lowering of the traditional or extant rules for the evaluation of what is news as previously known to the traditional media. This paper, therefore, attempts some key observations of emerging trends in the new definition of news in the online age, and some of the factors that are played up in the evaluation of news amongst traditional practioners in the media and communications field, in the midst of the burgeoning list of information senders, sharers, receivers, persons-in-interaction, as triggered by the growing sophistication in technologies of communication, where the simple possession of an average hand-held device could make the bearer a practitioner.

It highlights the fact that media channels remain the most influential path to wooing electorates. It reasons that a control of the media could come via ownership pattern, or through the financial prowess of the campaigning entity, and the readiness to deploy same in the mobilization of voters. While the media could play a critical role in the manipulation of hearts and minds, for the benefit of a campaigner, an overwhelming ability to control the media is not an ultimate guarantor of electoral victory. There could as well be other intervening variables. The paper uses the 2015 general elections in Nigeria as a case, with a particular focus on the presidential elections, largely dominated by the All Progressive Party (APC, where Gen. Mohammadu Buhari was presidential candidate and the People’s Democratic Party (PDP, where the incumbent, Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan was candidate. It concluded that despite the statutor...

The redefinition of life away from an original homeland could be physical through the construction of home and homeland , or psychological via a nascent attempt at self-presentation (Wood, et al, 2001). Both cases are continuous, but moreso, when it is of the latter. The fragility of diasporic state directly or indirectly conditions an emergent effort for survival. That struggle is witnessed in multi-sectors, including economic, political, cultural, social, and religious, amongst many others. The sectors are reflected in the real world just as it is becoming increasingly represented in the virtual world. While some scholars evaluate it from 1980 upwards (Zuelow, 2006), others concentrate on ideas around it across time (Smith, 1994; Brubaker, 1996; Ozkirimlii, 2000). Many others try to group theories of nationalism into typologies, for easier understanding (Smith, 1994; Greenfeld, 1995; Hechter, 2000). While a grouping of the arguments can be elusive, relationships between the individual and the collective to the state are in the centre of most analyses. The reason is that it invites us to, at once examine some important issues, and in great depth. It talks about critical minds, then critical times, and then moves on to the role of the media in the evolution of a peaceful, just and inclusive society. The subject matter therefore envisages some structural or dialectical connections and interconnections between all the variables in evidence. And these variables are critical mind, critical time, the media, and then a society that is peaceful, just and inclusive. There is a delicate relationship between all these variables. It is important, therefore, that we appreciate their differences and similarities, through their definitions, so we can effectively link their collective relevance, or irrelevance, to contemporary media times, and even to our overall everyday life. First, distinguished ladies and gentlemen, what do we mean by a critical mind? How do we dif...
