The literary style is very different and unique from the other witnesses. The focus is on the signs of Jesus’ identity and mission and on lengthy and theologically rich discourses. The incarnation of the “word” to be the light of the world is boldly proclaimed right at the beginning. The author focuses on proving that Jesus is the Son of God and was sent by God. Jesus’ words to Nicodemus summarizes the whole theme of this Gospel, as seen in 3:16. The main purpose of writing this Gospel is stated by the author himself in 20:31: “that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in His name.”
This paper is focusing on exegeting the conversation between Jesus and Nicodemus as seen in 3:1-10, 13-22.
