The tremendous negative slide in national housing prices from 2006 to 2012 had an uneven spatial distribution. These differences are explored within the context of net income and net population migration (movement of money with people). Median housing prices for urban areas from 2005 to 2010 and IRS county-to-county migration data are used to compare income migration among urban clusters of similar housing price trends. Selective migrations of people and income in and out of these housing clusters have either exacerbated the housing bust or softened its decline. Income effectiveness, or the gain or loss of money caused by migration, is a helpful measure that can be used to help predict future housing price movements.

The study region includes the current areas of Sonoma, Men docino, and Lake counties, and comprises the transitional boundary between the urban core of San Francisco and the resource-dependent periphery of far northern California. After describing the area’s distinct physical geography that was the stage for this growth, the paper defines a development process consisting of settlement diffusion, economic specialization, and urban hier archy (settlement structure) stability. To explore this framework, overall changes in the settlement landscape between 1850 and 1880 are analyzed. These population shifts are placed within the context of the counties’ occu pational structures, using data from the censuses and county directories. The analysis shows a distinct core-periphery structure in terms of a number of im portant trades and industries and increasing specialization throughout the re gion. Other occupations were located according to local geographies and market influences. Additionally, a model derived from this analysis focusing on the spatial construction of stable city hierarchies is proposed, which can be applied to the study of the settlement geographies of other regions across the country. The research shows how quickly these northern California coun ties melded into the San Francisco economic region with a firmly established settlement structure.

The number of points (i.e., arrow heads) found in a burial pit indicated the man’s (and, in one case, the woman’s) status as a warrior. The ‘‘gravy boat’’ was a symbol of religious or political power which may not have been associated with the man’s status as a warrior. Hally tried to establish a nested hierarchy of grave good importance: the presence of some grave goods were hypothesized only if certain other lowerorder goods were present as well. Given the hypothesized nested relation, an alternative technique not used by Hally would be Guttman scaling with its coefficient of reproducibility. The technique could determine how well the Mississippians at King conformed to the implied hierarchy of status (Bell and Frankland 1973). In summary, this book represents the best of archaeological puzzle solving. Hally is not afraid to put forth conjectures about the nature of Mississippian society based on scanty and somewhat debased data. He can do this with some confidence because over the more than thirty years of field work at the site, he and his associates have become familiar with the daily lives of the approximately 250–550 souls that occupied King over its short lifespan. Some geographers in their headlong rush to theorize without doing careful empirical investigation could learn from the meticulous, sometimes pedantic study of King: patience is both a virtue and its own reward.

However, the geometric precision of the boundaries of the western United States seems to defy the logic of the region’s human and physical geography, suggesting that other forces have played a role in the production of political space in the West at pivotal times in its history. In particular, the 36 th Congress (1859-61) changed the map of the West considerably just before the beginning of the Civil War, just when the politics of slavery was at its height. Congressional bills, debates, and votes show that slavery did have a strong influence on the creation of new states and territories, but western geography was also very important. In particular, bills were generally introduced to the 36 th Congress at the request of settlers, with boundaries that were geographically...

Family historians, genealogists, and historical population and cultural geographers have much in ... more Family historians, genealogists, and historical population and cultural geographers have much in common. Genealogy and family history research have a natural overlap with historical geography because they all deal with people who lived and died in the places of preceding eras. Genealogists are usually most concerned with finding related individuals using clues that include possible locations of life events, while historical geographers are more often focused on how larger social processes shaped bygone physical and cultural landscapes. Successful genealogists often see the need to understand historical regional and international events that influenced migration patterns, and to recognize the effects of changing political boundaries on their research techniques. Similarly, historical geographers have noticed that family histories and genealogies have great potential to help answer crucial questions regarding past places. Advances in computer and Internet technology have resulted in the accelerating availability of easily accessible and searchable genealogical records that can be used by genealogists and historical geographers alike. As the popularity of genealogy grows and as digital resources and search technologies multiply, the commonalities between historical geography and family history will most likely inspire greater success in both arenas of endeavor.

We calculated export over- and underestimation for each country and all of their bilateral trading partners. By keeping totals for over- and underestimation in separate categories we avoided the cancellation effect of aggregating positive and negative discrepancies
