Due to the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, this scenario may have been aggravated. Thus, the objective of the current study was to evaluate changes in the suicide risk rate from the period before to during the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as the factors associated with this outcome among Brazilian undergraduate students. Methods This was a nationwide survey carried out in Brazil with a cross-sectional design, including two data collection periods: a single-center in-person collection in 2019 and another multicenter online collection in 2020/2021. Data were collected using self-administered instruments. The outcome was a high risk of suicide, measured through the Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview. Analyses were carried out on data from two periods, i.e. before and during the pandemic (bivariate analysis and interaction tests), and a model of associated facto...

The contribution by each of them made expanded and enriched the discussion, by shifting it from the scientific realm of health to the context of culture, ethics and social relations as a whole. It is with great excitement and motivation that we respond to their comments, addressing some selected aspects only, due to space limitations of this section. Guilherme Cecatti made some important notes on methodological issues, particularly addressing the lack of information on the use of forceps in Brazil, in the article. This was suppressed, given the many outcomes addressed in our investigation. However, considering that one of the core purposes of our paper was to present an overview of birthcare in Brazil in women considered at normal obstetric risk, we thank Cecatti the chance of com...

The probability of manifesting clinically relevant depression symptom episodes raised while agein... more The probability of manifesting clinically relevant depression symptom episodes raised while ageing, mainly due to increasing episode persistence and recurrence. The influence of individual factors on new episode emergence and persistence was evident in this study, with loneliness being a highly relevant factor. Major efforts should be made to develop tailored action plans in tackling late-life depression and prevent depression from becoming chronic. DEPRESSION SYMPTOM TRANSITIONS IN OLDER AGE: A MULTI-STATE STUDY • Depression is very frequent in older age [1,2]. Almost one in four adults may experience a depression disorder episode in late life. Up to 10% of older adults may experience an unremitting and chronic course of depressive symptoms. Finally, recurrent depression prevalence is between 25-40% in late life. • Depression seems to evolve in older age, dynamically transitioning throughout discrete disorder statuses. Little is know about the temporal dynamics of depressive symptom episodes and concomitants. • This study aimed: 1) to analyse the temporal dynamics of clinically relevant depression symptoms in older population; and 2) to examine the influence of risk factors on symptom episode emergence and persistence.

In this scenario, geolocation-based dating applications provide a viable alternative for finding partners in a practical and timely manner, but may be accompanied by certain risk behaviors for HIV infection. Although there are considerable number of users over 50 on these applications, no studies have addressed this problem. The aim of the present study was to analyze factors of vulnerability to HIV/Aids among the population of men who have sex with men (MSM) age 50 years or older who use dating apps. Methods: This was a cross-sectional, population-survey-based, analytical study, conducted exclusively online with a sample of 412 MSM. The data was collected from the following apps: Grindr ® , Hornet ® , Scruff ® and Daddy Hunter ®. Results: Factors associated with a higher chance of having HIV were: sexual relations with an HIV-infected partner (ORa = 5.53; 95%CI = 2.23-13.73); chemsex (ORa = 3.97; 95%CI = 1.72-8.92); and, above all, having an HIV-infected partner (ORa = 8.02; 95%CI = 2.01-32.01). The belief that apps increase protection against sexually transmitted infections (ORa = 0.43; 95%CI = 0.19-0.95) and not being familiar with post-exposure prophylaxis (ORa = 0.43; 95%CI = 0.19-0.95) were associated with decreased chances of having HIV. Conclusions: We highlight some important factors that structure the vulnerability of the MSM surveyed in relation to HIV infection. The findings should be used to customize care for this population, which could bring them in more for health care services.

Methods: An online survey was conducted in Brazil and Portugal in April, during the period of social isolation for COVID-19, with a sample of 2361 MSMs. Recruitment was done through meeting apps and Facebook. Results: Most of the sample (53.0%) had casual sex partners during sheltering. Factors that increased the odds of engaging in casual sex in Brazil were having group sex (aOR 2.1, 95% CI 1.3–3.4), living in an urban area (aOR 1.6, 95% CI 1.1–2.2), feeling that sheltering had a high impact on daily life (aOR 3.0, 95% CI 1.1–8.3), having casual instead of steady partners (aOR 2.5, 95% CI 1.8–3.5), and not decreasing the number of partners (aOR 6.5, 95% CI 4.2–10.0). In Portugal, the odds of engaging in casual sex increased with using Facebook to find partners (aOR 4.6...

In this study, which combined participant observation, 25 biographical interviews and a behavioural survey of 380 self-identified men who had sex with men in the metropolitan region of Recife (Brazil), we investigated how the sex-gender system, through body stylisation (masculine and effeminate) engenders desire and sexual positioning in men's sexual scenes. The analysis indicated that the sex-gender system tends to reinforce images that portray masculine men as ativos and effeminate men as passivos. However, regarding sexual positioning, sexual versatility is most common (83.3%), which can increase the likelihood of HIV infection and transmission. Stylisations also engender differences in violence related to sexual orientation (e.g. effeminate men were 1.9 times more likely to have experienced violence than masculine men) and desirability (e.g. effeminate men are 6.1 times more likely to be rejected erotically than masculine men). Sexual positioning and stylisation jointly enable community sexual scripts and pathways for HIV to circulate, producing individual and social vulnerability to the epidemic.

Despite several methodological advances and hundreds of empirical studies implemented worldwide, some inchoate findings and methodological challenges remain. The in-depth assessment of the local structure of networks and the performance of the available estimators are particularly relevant when the target populations are sparse and highly stigmatized. In such populations, bottlenecks as well as other sources of biases (for instance, due to homophily and/or too sparse or fragmented groups of individuals) may be frequent, affecting the estimates. In the present study, data were derived from a cross-sectional, multicity RDS study, carried out...

Among the 71 participants, 53 (74.7%) had been using the same inhaler device for at least two years and 41 (57.8%) had been under treatment for two ye...
