In this paper we study generic coverings of C 2 branched over a curve s.t. the total space is a n... more In this paper we study generic coverings of C 2 branched over a curve s.t. the total space is a normal analytic surface, in terms of a graph representing the monodromy of the covering, called monodromy graph. A complete description of the monodromy graphs and of the local fundamental groups is found in case the branch curve is {x n = y m } (with n ≤ m) and the degree of the cover is equal to n or n − 1.

Nous prouvons que F i h (k, n) est (si non vide) une sousvariété complexe de Gr(k, n) h de dimension i(n − i) + hk(i − k) et son groupe fondamental est trivial si i = min(n, hk), hk = n et n > 2 et egal au groupe de tresses de la sphère CP 1 si n = 2. Finalement, nous calculons le groupe fondamental dans le cas particulier des arrangements d'hyperplans, c'està dire k = n − 1.

The Noether-Horikawa surfaces are the minimal surfaces S with K^2=2p_g-4. For 8 | K^2 they belong... more The Noether-Horikawa surfaces are the minimal surfaces S with K^2=2p_g-4. For 8 | K^2 they belong to two families of respective type C and N (connected, resp. non connected branch locus for the canonical map). For 16 | K^2 the two types are homeomorphic. Ulf Persson constructed surfaces of type N with a maximally singular canonical model X, whose topology encodes information on the differentiable structure of S. A similar analysis was done by the first author for type C. In this paper we study the genus 2 fibration on X and, in particular, our main result is (X^# being the nonsingular locus of X) \pi_1(X^#)= Z_4 x Z_4 if 8 | K^2 but 16 does not | K^2 \pi_1(X^#)= Z_4 x Z_2 if 16 | K^2.

They found a complete description of the monodromy of the cover in terms of the monodromy graphs and an almost complete description of the local fundamental groups in case .n;m/D 1. For the general case, they give explicit descriptions of base changes in terms of monodromy graphs; they describe completely the embedded resolution graphs in the case njm. Via these base changes every cover is a quotient of such a cover. © 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
