Block Matching Motion Estimation (ME) is adopted in video coding standards to improve the performance in terms of speed and at the same time, the power consumption should be minimal. The paper proposes an efficient block-based ME architecture, in which the motion vectors are obtained by searching for the best match in the previous frame. A resizable smart snake order is utilized for scanning the frames of different block sizes which improves the data reuse efficiency. The architecture is based on applying the global search ability of Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) that reduces the number of logic elements. The parallel execution involved in the processing of sub-regions in the search window enables the architecture to achieve high speed. The proposed work coded in Verilog hardware description language, and implemented with Altera cyclone II FPGA, operates at a maximum frequency of ...

HEVC provides better performance in compression and efficiency in coding for Beyond HD and UHD videos. The main drawback is its computationcomplexity. The complexity is mainly due to Motion Estimation (ME), as it consumes more than half of time to encode. Many fast motion estimation algorithms have been developed so as to reduce the complexity in encoding. This paper proposes the implementation of New Combined Three Step Search pattern for ME algorithm. The simulation result shows average time saving of 50.07%and slight improvement in quality compared with existing patterns.A System is designed using Altera System on a Programmable Chip (SOPC) builder and the algorithm is being implemented using Nios-II software build tools to get optimal performance

Motion estimation is one of the most important and complex block of all the existing video coding standards. In the video coding standard H.264/AVC, Motion Estimation is allowed to search multiple reference frames and the ME process is much more complex due to variable block size with quarter pixel accuracy. Therefore, efficient motion estimation algorithm is required to reduce the computational complexity. The improved Search algorithm is suitable for stationary, quasi-stationary and fast moving video sequences and computationally less complex. The results show that the proposed algorithm requires very few number of search points for finding the best matched block with almost negligible loss in video quality. As compared to the existing ME algorithm, the simulated results of the proposed algorithm achieved an average of 11.145 searc...

The search efficiency for sequences with fast motions and high resolutions is improved by proposing New Cross Diagonal-Hexagon Search (NCDHS) algorithm which involves a novel multi half-hexagon grid global search pattern and a cross diagonal-hexagon local search pattern. The new search pattern enables the proposed algorithm to perform better search using 9.068 search points on an average, to obtain optimal motion vector with slight improvement in quality. This inturn reduces ME Time upto 50.11%, 47.12%, 32.99% and 43.28% on average when compared to the existing Diamond Search (DS), Hexagon Search (HS), New Cross Hexagon Search (NHEXS) and Enhanced Diamond Search (EDS) algorithms respectively. The novelty of the algorithm is further achieved by applying the algorithm proposed for live streaming application. The NCDHS algorithm is...
