This research aimed to evaluate the valorization of a bio-stabilized MSW amendment for the production of faba bean (Vicia faba L.) crop. For this purpose, biomass production and growth, as well as, seed yield and seed components, seed nutrient accumulation, plant pigments, soil properties, and microorganisms were evaluated in comparison with faba bean mineral fertilization in a greenhouse experiment. The results demonstrated that the bio-stabilized MSW amendment achieved similar biomass production, plant growth, seed yield, nitrogen and protein content, and pigment content as the mineral fertilization treatment. On the other hand, the organic fertilization did not exhibit significant effects on the yield components number of pods per plant, and number of seeds per pod, and nutrient accumulation in seeds with respect to mineral a...

For this purpose, camelina [Camelina sativa (L.) Crantz] was included in a crop rotation (camelina-barley [Hordeum vulgare (L.)]-camelina) fertilized with two organic fertilizers (dewatered sludge and composted sludge) during three growing seasons (2015–2018). Three treatments were considered in this experimental study of 0.018 ha: (1) Fertilization with composted sludge (15 t ha−1), (2) fertilization with dewatered sludge (35 t ha−1), and (3) control treatment without fertilization. Results showed that camelina’s yield was affected by climatic conditions, ranging from 0.9 to 1.4 t ha−1 in the first season (2015/2016) and the third season (2017/2018 and did not present significant differences between treatments. The yield components with a positive response to organic fertilization were number of silicles, number of seeds per...

Using the physical equations that govern the thermal and electrical models involved during a CubeSat operation, the proposed integrated model can estimate the temperature and energy conditions of the battery, not only in an isolated way but also in considering the mutual effects on the system. Besides, special attention is given to photovoltaic panels used in the energy harvesting process, whose performance is affected by irradiance and temperature along the orbit. The integrated model can be useful for engineers when developing the subsystems of their CubeSats, taking into account, for example, the battery temperature control through a heater. Simulations were performed to illustrate the functioning of the proposed model with variations in the power requi...

Research paper thumbnail of Measuring and categorizing the water-related downstream risks associated with mineral extraction in Honduras: How severe, and how distributed?

Applied Geography

Predictions about the spatial distribution of environmental impacts related to extractive industr... more Predictions about the spatial distribution of environmental impacts related to extractive industries have commonly assumed an inverse relationship between the severity of impact and distance from the site of extraction. However, because of the salience of water to both extractive industries and other livelihood strategies, many severe externalities of extractive development are experienced in areas hydrologically linked to the site of extraction , though these areas may not be those closest to mines themselves. This paper uses cadastral and remotely sensed data to model the spatial distribution of water, and extractive industries in Honduras and identify hydrological links between mines and downstream areas. Based on water availability, and the amount of upstream extractive development, it describes vulnerability to water-related risks from extractive industries in terms of severity as well as its concentration, measuring how local or spatially distributed are potential sources of impact. A consideration of risks experienced by agricultural producers indicates that small-scale farmers and large, commercial growers face distinctly different types of risk, and suggests that each group may pursue different strategies for mitigation. These strategies differ with respect to the spatial and administrative scales at which they would be pursued, as well as the degree to which they push for governance approaches focusing on spatially-defined, cadastral units of regulation or on broader regional and landscape impacts.
