However, it is questionable whether formal, or assigned, mentoring relationships are the same as informal ones. Multiple methods were used in this study to investigate formal mentors' perceptions of how they assist their protégés. The results suggest formal mentors serve some, but not all, of the same functions as informal mentors.

The results suggest that GPA is significantly related to self-directedness among college students, and grade-level is another important variable that explains self-directedness scores. There were no differences based upon gender. Implications for future research and practice are presented.

A framework proposed by L. W. Hellervik, J. F. Hazucha, and R. J. Schneider (1992) suggests that there are five steps in the change process. These steps were used to formulate some, hypotheses about individual change, the role of feedback, and the development of skills. Participants were managers assessed between 1989 and 1992 by an internat onal consulting firm specializing in assessment-based selection and development. In 1994, managers who, had been assessed and were still employed by the firm participated in a follow-up to which 421 manager and boss pairs responded. Results were consistent with the development process outlined by Hellervik et al., with particular support for the importance of accurately identifying needs, committing to development objectives, and working on behavior change through development activities. Findings also support the importance of feedback during development, the importance of development planning, and the idea that the number of development activities in which managers participate is positively related to skill development. It first provides an overview of personality constructs prominent in the literature on personality at work. Next, the article reviews recent research on personality measurement, including: issues associated with different measurement methods; and how the level of measurement and alternative personality taxonomies influence relationships between personality and work outcomes. It summarizes models describing the processes underlying observed correlations between personality traits and both attitudes and performance. The article then presents an integrated model of the relationship between personality and performance that pulls together aspects of each model reviewed. This model highlights the mediating role attitudes play in the path from personality to performance. The article closes with a research agenda suggested by the integrated model.

The study included samples from multiple disciplines, considered different criterion measures, and corrected for statistical artifacts. Data from 1,753 independent samples were included in the meta-analysis, yielding 6,589 correlations for 8 different criteria and 82,659 graduate students. The results indicated that the GRE and UGPA are generalizably valid predictors of graduate grade point average, Ist-year graduate grade point average, comprehensive examination scores, publication citation counts, and faculty ratings. GRE correlations with degree attainment and research productivity were consistently positive; however, some lower 90% credibility intervals included 0. Subject Tests tended to be better predictors than the Verbal, Quantitative, and Analytical tests. Effective selection and training of graduate students is of critical importance for all fields requiring graduate training. Admission of poorly qualified students misuses the resources of students, faculty, and schools. Failure to admit and retain outstanding candi

He conveys a quite positive view of what is known about learning from experience by contending that more research investigating what makes experiences developmental is not needed, characterizing a prior study as ''definitive,'' and making assertions such as ''more than enough is known to do a pretty good job of putting experience to work'' and ''we have the tools to support learning from experience.'' On the other hand, McCall concludes by outlining three areas where further research is ''crucial.'' In my view, McCall best captures where we are in understanding experience-based learning when he states ''The difficulty comes in determining whether or not a specific person will actually learn what the experience offers.'' Much has been learned about how leaders learn from their experience, but more knowledge is needed to confidently predict when and what a particular person will successfully learn from a specific experience. Without this knowledge, practitioners' ability to help organizations develop talent by methodically assigning experiences to leaders is limited. In this commentary, I suggest areas where further research can close gaps in
