One of a series of reference works published by Baker Book House, the EDWM presents in irenic fashion a broad-based evangelical orientation toward the missionary enterprise. The roughly 1,440 entries (760,000 assigned words) provide comprehensive coverage of the field (including theology, social sciences, history, religions, theory, practice, people, and geography). The writing style enables accessibility for the lay reader, and the additional helps (bibliographies, an outline of the articles, indices, and cross-references) make the EDWM usable for the scholar or student of mission who needs to survey a missiological discipline.

Several different constituencies within world Christianity held significant events around 2010. From 2005, an international group worked collaboratively to develop an intercontinental and multi-denominational project, known as Edinburgh 2010, and based at New College, University of Edinburgh. This initiative brought together representatives of twenty different global Christian bodies, representing all major Christian denominations and confessions, and many different strands of mission and church life, to mark the Centenary. Essential to the work of the Edinburgh 1910 Conference, and of abiding value, were the findings of the eight think-tanks or 'commissions'. These inspired the idea of a new round of collaborative reflection on Christian mission-but now focused on nine themes identified as being key to mission in the twenty-first century. The study process was polycentric, open-ended, and as inclusive as possible of the different genders, regions of the world, and theological and confessional perspectives in today's church. It was overseen by the Study

In this volume, we do not have space to even begin to scratch the surface. Being forced to choose an orientation, we collected stories and thinking related to the way evangelicals have idealized, operationalized and organized in light of the remaining frontiers of mission.https://scholar.csl.edu/edinburghcentenary/1005/thumbnail.jp

I’ve spoken in Wheaton’s chapel, have had Wheaton graduates in my classes, and have friends that are professors there. I love Wheaton and desire its best. Moreover, like many evangelicals, I view Wheaton as belonging not merely to the Wheaton board, faculty, administration, and alumni—but to the worldwide evangelical community. What Wheaton does affects us all. As I’ve observed the unfolding drama, I’ve had concerns over the way Wheaton has framed the issues, over the repercussions of this for Christian witness, and over the failure to include missiologists and missionaries as interlocutors. That is, for mos...

Most of culture lies hidden and is outside voluntary control making up the warp and weff of human existence. Even when small fragments of culture are elevated to awareness, they are difficult to change, not only because they are so personally experienced but because people cannot act or interact at all in any meaningful way except through the medium of culture .1 It has long been recognized by the social sciences that we are creatures made for culture and by culture. We cannot escape culture just as we cannot escape our physical bodies. Understanding culture is at the heartbeat of the missionary enterprise .2 Certainly it is also of core concern in the effort to con-textualize the Gospel. At the outset we should note that the goal of contextu-alization is not to make the Gospel relevant: it is ...

This principle states an undeniable fact. Human beings do build barriers around their own societies. More exactly we may say that the ways in which each society lives and speaks, dresses and works, of necessity set it off from other societies. The world's population is a mosaic and each piece has a separate life of its own that seems strange and often unlovely to men and women of other pieces. (McGavran, Understanding (1990), p. 163).

In this article I outline a contextualization paradigm that goes beyond theologizing to include all that the Christian faith is and all that following Christ calls us to do. Such an approach may be called comprehensive contextualization.
