In this project, we will examine a data set consisting of 333,000 users and 9 million conversations between these users over a period of 2 weeks. Users are paired randomly for conversations, may leave the conversation at any time, and may carry on multiple conversations simultaneously. This random pairing creates a de novo online social network (i.e. not based on a real world social network), and provides the opportunity to examine conversation compatibility between any two users. We observe, however, that there are multiple differences between same-gender and opposite-gender conversations. Namely, same-gender conversations are much more likely to have 0 lines, signifying that a user left a conversation based on profile data only, which includes gender and interests. Thus, the issue of conversation compatibility can be divided into two parts: single-gender conversations and opposite-gender conversation...

The most important malaria vectors in sub-Saharan Africa are mosquitoes of the Anopheles gambiae complex including An. gambiae (sensu stricto). Given the increasing rates of insecticide resistance in these mosquitoes, alternative control strategies based on the release of genetically modified males are being evaluated to stop transmission by these disease vectors. These strategies rely on the mating competitiveness of release males, however currently there is no method to determine male mating success without sacrificing the female. Interestingly, unlike other insects, during mating An. gambiae males transfer their male accessory glands (MAGs) seminal secretions as a coagulated mating plug which is deposited in the female atrium.

Detailed studies of Endeavour basalts provide a geological framework for the tectonic, magmatic, and hydrothermal evolution of the ridge, and the geochemical diversity of basalts that result from short spatial-and temporal-scale variations in mantle sources and melting processes. Because the geologic and geochemical context of these basalts is well known, new uranium series disequilibria and model ages place additional constraints on the recent magmatic evolution of the ridge. While Endeavour basalts vary widely and include depleted, normal, transitional, and enriched compositions, relatively little variation is observed in Th/ U ratios or 238 U-230 Th disequilibria in near zero-age basalts. The largest variation in both exists in lavas erupted most recently in the axial valley (the 'Graben Trend') with overall higher 230 Th excesses. Some basalts with lower 230 Th excesses collected from pillow mounds on the flanks of the ridge (the 'Inflated Trend') have aged significantly since eruption and document the episodic nature of volcanic and tectonic regimes at Endeavour. Uranium-series melting models using two lithologies (peridotite and eclogite) can account for U-Th systematics in near zero-age basalts. These models indicate that mixing of diverse, deeply-generated, enriched melts and homogeneous, shallowlygenerated, depleted melts can account for the geochemistry of Endeavour basalts. In addition, decreasing porosity and melting rate of the eclogite component is primarily responsible for chemical and physical changes occurring at the Endeavour segment through time.

Baton Rouge : Louisiana State University Press , 2013. xi + 273 pp. $45.00 cloth.Book Reviews and NotesHistorians have devoted considerable attention to ministers during the American Civil War. More than three decades ago James H. Moorhead (American Apocalypse: Yankee Protestants and the Civil War, 1860-1869 [New Haven, Conn.: Yale University Press, 1978]) analyzed the millennial overtones in sermons of New England ministers. More recently, Harry S. Stout (Upon the Altar of the Nation: A Moral History of the Civil War [New York: Viking, 2006]) depicted the northern clergy as kneejerk supporters of a war that oftentimes was conducted in an immoral, unchristian manner. In this fine volume, social historian Timothy Wesley maps out much underexplored territory by examining the political impact of ministers' words and deeds and the multifaceted responses to these utterances and actions by the laity, denominational leaders, military and civil authorities, and the secular press. He effectively shows how people inside and outside the church manipulated or inhibited the "political behavior" of clergymen (7), in the process revealing rifts between ministers and laypersons regarding the extent and appropriateness of the politicization of the church and confirming how religion and politics were thoroughly blended during the war.One strength of Wesley's work is the geographic breadth of his ministerial coverage. Indeed, his careful attention to regional differences and unique local conditions illuminates the diversity and complexity of clerical experiences. For instance, he discusses northern clerics who unequivocally supported the Union; northern pastors who were accused of disloyalty for both sins of omission or commission; border state ministers who sometimes served divided congregations and oftentimes clashed with either coreligionists or secular figures; clergymen in the occupied South who were arrested or exiled by Union officers; southern divines who defended the war effort and promoted Confederate nationalism; and African American preachers who championed moral self-improvement and education as stepping stones along the path to freedom and political rights.Wesley's discussion of treason during the war is also instructive. He explains how most Northerners went beyond the constitutional definition of treason and scrutinized a minister's words for signs of disloyalty. In fact, a clergyman need not commit an overt act against the government to be considered a traitor. Laypersons, newspaper editors, and military authorities branded numerous preachers as disloyal for failing to pray for Abraham Lincoln, for refusing to give vocal support to the Union cause, or even for holding personal opinions (the open-ended allegation of sympathizing with the South) that called into question their loyalty to the United States. Although he recognizes that in many cases Republicans targeted Democratic pastors for purely partisan reasons, at times Wesley makes unsubstantiated claims about the extent of disloyalty in the northern pulpit. For example, at the beginning of chapter 3 he asserts, "and still other clergymen, at least in sentiment if less often in deed, were openly disloyal to the Union" (43). At the chapter's end he concludes, "treacherous congregational pastors who sapped their congregants' commitment to the war effort were threats to the Union" (58). …

Contrary to Jayne’s view, human progress was a mantra shared by all. At best, Jayne demonstrates that Lincoln was not an orthodox Calvinist, but then again, by midcentury few American Christians were. Judged by this standard, Lincoln’s political and religious thought may not have been nearly as countercultural as Jayne would have us believe. Indeed Lincoln’s eventual greatness as a political leader and orator might derive from not just his commitment to Jeffersonian natural rights but his ability to transcend and translate them to an eclectic but essentially Christian people looking to find meaning in a hellish war. Moreover, for many students at the Uniformed Services University they are adjusting to being on active duty in the military. Mentoring has been considered a way to help with the transition and professional development. Prior to 2015, there was no formal mentoring program for new students at the Uniformed Services University. Materials and Methods: In order to address the demands and challenges facing matriculating medical students, the Rising Physicians Program was created. This student initiated program enabled preclerkship medical students to connect with residents at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center via a secure database with resident profiles. Residents were recruited and voluntarily agreed to serve as mentors. Students were then able to access the database and reach out to mentors based on their specific goals. The program was introduced to students during orientation and student participation was completely voluntary. A survey was designed using best survey practices and sent to the 175 students participating in the program for the 2015 academic (class of 2019) year to determine participation and characteristics of the program. Results: Sixty-four percent (112/175) of the students from the class of 2019 participated in the post-implementation survey. Fifteen percent of the class (26/175) reported participating in the voluntary mentoring program. The three most commonly used communication methods with mentors in precedence were in-person, e-mail, and text messages. The majority of the students found their interactions in this program were beneficial and did not get in the way of their academic performance. The most common topics of discussion were academics (20%), mentor's past experience (22%), military lifestyle (7%), medical school pathways (23%), and specialty selections (23%). Limitations of the program included a lack of U.S. Air Force mentors and mentors within certain residency specialties. Conclusions: The Rising Physician Program provides a near-peer mentoring model for new medical students. Students preferred to communicate with their mentors in person, but the flexibility of communication appears to be important. New students have a variety of academic and professional development concerns that could partially be addressed through mentoring by residents.
