Inflammatory response variables in urine and blood tests can help rule out other disorders and support a clinical diagnosis of acute appendicitis (AA), but there is no specific blood test that can diagnose AA. In order to address this, our study sought to establish the value of (NLR) as a prognostic and severity predictor in patients with AA. Material and method: We conducted an observational retrospective study of 356 patients who had undergone surgery for AA, assessing NLR as an outcome metric. The NLR was estimated using the differential WBC (white blood count) reported on admission; the data obtained were then recorded in a database and statistically analyzed. Results: The NLR medians correlated (p<0.001) in uncomplicated AA, AA with localized peritonitis, and AA with generalized peritonitis (Kruskal-Wallis test). The ROC curve identified 81.4 % sensitivity, 62.5 % specificity, and a 73 % AUC...

This was done by comparing data from the Mures County Clinical Hospital, Clinic of Urology one year before (non-pandemic, NP) and during (pandemic, P) the global COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: A retrospective study was performed based on the Mures County Clinical Hospital database. The inclusion criteria were clinical suspicion (digital rectal examination) and elevated prostate-specific antigen (PSA) level (threshold 3.2 ng/mL). Statistical analysis was performed with STATA 11 Program. Mann-Whitney, Student and chi-square tests were used to compare median PSA, prostate volume, number of TRUSbx performed, number of core biopsies, Gleason Score values, and perineural invasion between the NP and P groups. Results: A total of 440 patients were studied, comprising 271 in the NP group and 169 in the P group. The average number of TRUSbx procedures was 22.58 per month in 2019 (NP group) and 14.08 per month in 2020 (P group), representing a decrease of 37.65%. Analysis of data for the P and NP groups showed a median PSA of 10.48 vs 10.58, mean prostatic volume of 43.69 vs 43.26, number of core biopsies 11.39 vs 11.70, and Gleason score of 7.31 vs 7.15, respectively. Mann-Whitney U test revealed no statistically significant differences between the two groups, with only the Gleason Score showing a trend for significance (p = 0.065).Conclusions: The COVID-19 pandemic led to a major decrease in the number of surgeries performed, with TRUSbx declining by almost 40%. No differences between P and NP periods were observed for median PSA, prostate volume, number of core biopsies, and perineural invasion. The Gleason Score showed a slightly higher incidence of advanced prostate cancer in the P group, but this did not reach statistical significance.

The study aimed to analyse the legislation and concerns of international nanoscience agencies as compared to the provisions of the relevant legislation in Romania, in order to describe the current status quo of health policies in the field of occupational exposures to nanoparticles. European institutions are turning to modern and varied solutions to raise awareness of the risk that nanoparticle represent for public health, and to stimulate scientific research in the field; they also encourage Member States to pursue a similar policy. Romanian legislation has not yet taken on the European Union's recommendations regarding health protection for occupational exposure to nanoparticles. Keywords: ...

Material & methods: Clinical data and blood specimens from patients with and without prostate cancer were obtained. A quantitative sandwich ELISA method was used to determine serological values of FSCN1. Results: Although serum values of FSCN1 were dissimilar in the two cohorts of patients (6.90 vs 7.33 ng/ml), the difference was not statistically significant (p = 0.20). Serum values of FSCN1 stratified for Gleason score groups were not significantly distinguishable (p = 0.65). A negative correlation (rho = -0.331; p = 0.009) was reported between FSCN1 and age. Conclusion: Further studies are required to evaluate a possible diagnostic role of FSCN1 in prostate cancer.

These are supposed to cause the so-called “interval cancer”, having a rapidly progressive growth and being difficult to detect and to obtain an endoscopic complete resection. We aimed to establish the most important metabolic risk factors for sessile serrated lesions. Methods: We performed a retrospective case-control study, on a series of 2918 consecutive patients who underwent colonoscopy in Gastroenterology and Endoscopy Unit, County Clinical Emergency Hospital, Târgu-Mureș, Romania between 1 st of January 2015-31 th of December 2017. In order to evaluate the metabolic risk factors for polyps’ development, enrolled participants were stratified in two groups, a study group, 33 patients with SSLs lesions, and a control group, 138 patients with adenomatous polyps, selected by systematic sampling for age and anatomical site.
