In label-free biosensing, a continuous improvement of the limit of detection is necessary to reso... more In label-free biosensing, a continuous improvement of the limit of detection is necessary to resolve the small change of the surface refractive index produced by interacting biomolecules at a very small concentration. In the present work, optical sensors based on one-dimensional photonic crystals supporting Bloch surface waves are proposed and adopted for label-free optical biosensing. We describe the implementation of an angularly resolved ellipsometric optical sensing scheme based on Bloch surface waves sustained by tantala/silica multilayers. The angular operation is obtained using a focused beam at fixed wavelength and detection of the angular reflectance spectrum by means of an array detector. The results show that the experimental limit of detection for a particular photonic crystal design is 6.5 × 10(-7) refractive index units (RIU)/Hz(1/2) and further decrease could be obtained. For the first time, we report on the practical application of this technique to a cancer biomarker protocol that aims at the detection of a specific glycoprotein (angiopoietin 2) involved in angiogenesis and inflammation processes.

In an attempt to provide a fully dielectric platform for two-dimensional optical circuitry, we re... more In an attempt to provide a fully dielectric platform for two-dimensional optical circuitry, we report on the focusing features of an ultrathin polymeric lens fabricated on a planar multilayer. The radiation coupled to surface modes sustained by the multilayer can be focused or waveguide-injected into linear ridges by exploiting a dielectricloading mechanism successfully exploited for plasmons. The low losses of this photonic system also allow long propagation lengths in the visible spectral range. Experimental observations made by fluorescence imaging of the multilayer surface are well supported by computational data obtained through an effective index approach.

The prognosis of these patients is still poor with a median survival of less than 1 year. Current therapeutic approaches include palliative radiotherapy and systemic therapy with chemotherapy and targeted agents. For bone metastasis, zoledronic acid is the most commonly used bisphosphonate to prevent, reduce the incidence and delay the onset of skeletal-related events (SREs). Recently, denosumab, a fully human monoclonal antibody directed against the receptor activator of nuclear factor κB (RANK) ligand inhibiting the maturation of pre-osteoclasts into osteoclasts, showed increased time to SREs and overall survival compared with zoledronic acid. The treatment of brain metastasis is still controversial. We propose a novel approach for wide-field fluorescence imaging based on dielectric multilayers o... more We propose a novel approach for wide-field fluorescence imaging based on dielectric multilayers on glass coverslides. It is demonstrated that the fluorescence radiated by emitters in proximity to the multilayer surface can couple to Bloch Surface Waves and subsequently leaks into the glass. The coupled fluorescence is beamed with low divergence according to the Bloch Surface Waves spectral/angular dispersion and then collected with a low-magnification imaging system. Since the coupling between emitter and surface modes is dependent on the surface local morphology, we find a strong spectral deformation of the collected fluorescence spectrum depending on the corresponding surface relieves imaged.
