Research paper thumbnail of Long-term stability of ferri-/ferrocyanide as an electroactive component for redox flow battery applications: On the origin of apparent capacity fade

We assess the suitability of potassium ferri-/ferrocyanide as an electroactive species for long-t... more We assess the suitability of potassium ferri-/ferrocyanide as an electroactive species for long-term utilization in aqueous organic redox flow batteries. A series of electrochemical and chemical characterization experiments was performed to distinguish between structural decomposition and apparent capacity fade of ferri-/ferrocyanide solutions used in the capacity-limiting side of a flow battery. Our results indicate that, in contrast with previous reports, no structural decomposition of ferri-/ferrocyanide occurs at tested pH values as high as 14 in the dark or in diffuse indoor light. Instead, an apparent capacity fade takes place due to an electroless reduction of ferricyanide to ferrocyanide, via electroless oxygen evolution reaction. We find that this parasitic process can be further exacerbated by carbon electrodes, with apparent capacity fade rates at pH 14 increasing with an increased ratio of carbon electrode surface area to total amount of ferricyanide in solution. (Euphorbiaceae) is a plant widely used in the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), but there are few scientific reports validating its activity in this area. In this work and through a bioguided assay, a crude extract stimulated glucose uptake in C2C12 myotubes up to 30%, thereby reducing insulin resistance induced by fatty acids compared to the basal control. A chromatographic fraction applied intraperitoneally (IP) in mice reduced glucose by 42% in a mouse model of T2DM, after administration of 10 doses during 20 days. A flavanone was purified from this active fraction and its structure was assigned by 1 Hand 13 C-NMR (1D and 2D) and MS. This compound retains the previously reported activity, stimulating in vitro the glucose uptake in a concentration-dependent manner. This study indicates that Jatropha gossypifolia L. extracts enhance glucose uptake in cultured myotubes and adipocytes and also improving glucose tolerance in an in vivo model.

METHODS Fasting glycemia, insulinemia, and glycated haemoglobin were determined by conventional methods, IR by Homeostatic model assessment (HOMA), lean mass by Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry, muscle activation through carnosine by Proton Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy, and musclin by Enzyme-Linked ImmunoSorbent Assay before and after a supervised, three-times/week, 12-week treadmill programme. HIIT (n = 29) consisted of six intervals with one-minute, high-intensity phases at 90% of peak oxygen consumption (VO2peak). MICT (n = 31) trained at 60% of VO2peak for 30 min. RESULTS Patients had a mean age of 50.8 ± 6.0 years, body mass index of 30.6 ± 4.0 kg/m2, and VO2peak of 29.0 ± 6.3 mL.kg-1.min-1. Compared to MICT, HIIT was not superior at reducing Ln HOMA-IR (adjusted mean difference: 0.083 [95%CI - 0.092 to 0.257]), carnosine or musclin or at increasing thigh lean mass. HIIT increased carnosine by 0.66 mmol/kg.ww (95% CI 0.08-1.24) after intervention. Both interventions reduced IR, body fat percentage and increased total lean mass/height2 and VO2peak. Musclin showed a non-significant reduction with a small effect size after both interventions. CONCLUSION Compared to MICT, HIIT is not superior at reducing IR, carnosine or musclin or at increasing skeletal muscle mass in adults with MS. Both training types improved IR, muscle mass and body composition. NCT03087721, March 22nd, 2017. TRIAL REGISTRATION NUMBER NCT03087721. Registered March 22nd, 2017.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of embedding a high intensity interval training (HITT) and muscular strength program in physical education (PE) classes on academic and behavioral outcomes. METHODS: Seventy children (40 boys & 30 girls; age 8-10 yrs. old) enrolled in Accelerations Academy were assigned into one of three conditions during a one-week period: control (n = 23), High Intensity Interval Training (HITT) (n = 25), and muscular strength (MS) (n = 22). The HIIT condition consisted of 4 days of HITT sessions (9 min/session; 30 sec on:30 sec off) followed by X min of standard PE activities; the MS condition consisted of 4 days of strength sessions (3 sets/10-12 reps for 3 exercises/session) followed by ~30 min of standard PE activities; the control condition consisted of ~50 min of standard PE only. PA intensity and duration was measured using actigraph accelerometers (Actigraph, Pensacola, FL). Math Assessment scores and Connor Abbreviated Ratings were conducted at baseline and post-intervention to identify academic and behavioral changes respectively. Intervention effects for outcomes were examined using regression analysis. RESULTS: Participation in HITT predicted higher vigorous (β=2.21, p=0.005) and very vigorous minutes (β=0.80, p < 0.001), but not moderate minutes compared to control. Participation in strength was not statistically different. HIIT participation was also associated with greater improvement on math test scores (β=1.52, p=0.04). No condition was associated with significant changes to behavioral ratings. CONCLUSION: Preliminary evidence from this study highlights the potential for embedding an acute HITT program within PE for improving physical activity levels and academic outcomes in elementary school children. This is consistent with prior studies which show how short bouts of intense exercise can improve cognitive and mental health outcomes in adolescent populations.

Vapor transport syntheses included both physical vapor transport from singlesource BiOI, as well as chemical vapor transport from Bi 2 O 3 + BiI 3 and from Bi + I 2 + Bi 2 O 3. Surface treatments included tape cleaving, rinsing in water, sonication in acetone, an aqueous HF etch, and a sequential HF etch with subsequent sonication in acetone. X-ray diffraction, XRD, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, XPS, probed the resulting bulk crystalline species and interfacial chemical states, respectively. In comparison with overlayer models of idealized oxide-terminated or iodide-terminated BiOI, angle-resolved XPS elucidated surface terminations as a function of each treatment. Ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy, UPS, established work-function, and Fermi-level energies for each treatment. Data reveal that HF etching yields interfacial BiI 3 at BiOI steps that is subsequently removed with acetone sonication. UPS establishes n-type behavior for the vapor-transport-synthesized BiOI, and surface work function and Fermi level shifts for each chemical treatment under study. We discuss the implications for processing BiOI nanofilms for energy-conversion applications.

Solar Energy, 2020

Many phase change materials (PCMs) experience a change in transparency when undergoing a phase tr... more Many phase change materials (PCMs) experience a change in transparency when undergoing a phase transition. These thermo-optically responsive materials can be used to generate passive temperature control systems for building enclosures. The integration of optical and thermal switches into smart temperature-controlling elements requires rationally designed PCMs featuring tunable optical and thermal properties. Two polymers, poly (Octadecyl methacrylate) (PSMA) and poly(2-(2-(octadecyloxy) ethoxy) ethyl methacrylate) (PE2SMA) were synthesized and evaluated for their potential use in passive thermal energy storage systems. UV-Visible Spectroscopy, Near Infra-Red Spectroscopy, and Differential Scanning Calorimetry were used to evaluate the effect that changes in the polymer chemical structure had on the optical and thermal properties of the resulting materials. Insertion of a 6-atom flexible spacer (diethylene glycol) between the pendant crystalline motif and the polymer backbone of PSMA resulted in increases of latent heat storage capacity from 62 J/g to 94 J/g and thermal conductivity from 0.218 W/mK to 0.318 W/mK. Notably, insertion of a flexible spacer also resulted in a melting transition temperature increase from 37.7°C for PSMA to 48°C for PE2SMA. The visible transmittance of the polymers increased from 0% to 90% upon transition from crystalline to amorphous state. This study presents a synthetic strategy to control thermal and optical properties of polymeric PCMs materials. The material properties and structure-property relationships derived from this study will enable the refinement of the models used to predict the performance of passive temperature-regulating systems. More accurate models will guide the development of the thermo-responsive polymeric materials required for better perfoming temperature-regulating building enclosures.
