However, in most of the cases providers of HPC services would not allow changes on the configuration, implementation of special features or a lower-level control on the computing infrastructure, for example for testing experimental configurations. The variety of use cases proposed by several departments of the University of Torino, including ones from solid-state chemistry, computational biology, genomics and many others, called for different and sometimes conflicting configurations; furthermore, several R&D activities in the field of scientific computing, with topics ranging from GPU acceleration to Cloud Computing technologies, needed a platform to be carried out on. The Open Computing Cluster for Advanced data Manipulation (OCCAM) is a multi-purpose flexible HPC cluster designed and operated by a collaboration between the University of Torino and the Torino bra...

Single-cell sequencing applications have spread from conventional RNA sequencing to epigenomics, e.g., ATAC-seq. Many related algorithms and tools have been developed, but few computational workflows provide analysis flexibility while also achieving functional (i.e., information about the data and the tools used are saved as metadata) and computational reproducibility (i.e., a real image of the computational environment used to generate the data is stored) through a user-friendly environment. Findings rCASC is a modular workflow providing an integrated analysis environment (from count generation to cell subpopulation identification) exploiting Docker containerization to achieve both functional and computational reproducibility in data analysis. Hence, rCASC provides preprocessing tools to remove low-quality cells and/or specific bias, e...

The practice of automated assessment in Mathematics using the grading system Maple T.A. has been introduced in many undergraduate scientific courses and, after the initial success, it has been diffused in high-schools through several projects aimed to improve Maths teaching and learning. The following paper is intended to describe the effectiveness of automated assessment as a learning tool, the strength of Maple T.A. for grading Mathematics and its integration in a learning content management system, and the results obtained at University and in high-schools.

Share-Grid adopts a cooperative approach, in which each participant allows the other ones to use his/her own resources on a reciprocity basis. ShareGrid is based on the OurGrid middleware, that provides a set of mechanisms enabling participating entities to quickly, fairly, and securely share their resources. In this paper we report our experience in designing, deploying, and using ShareGrid, and we describe the applications using it, as well as the lessons we learned, the problems that still remain open, and some possible solutions to them.

The assessment and certification of the achievement of learning objectives are a key point of act... more The assessment and certification of the achievement of learning objectives are a key point of actual discussion about e-learning. Progressive assessment is useful to inform students and teachers about personal and class advancements as well as engage and motivate them to complete a course. In order to be effective, assessment of online courses should include all fundamental aspects, from the development of individual skills to the interaction among participants. This paper shows and discusses a method to assess the participation to an online course: this method is developed by the Department of Mathematics of the University of Turin within the project Digital Mate Training, funded by the Fondazione CRT. The project is focused on enhancing and strengthening mathematical problem solving competences by using an Advanced Computing Environment and it is carried out through an online training on a Moodle platform. Students' progresses are measured through Digital Mate Coins and Digital Mate Badges, a system of scores implemented on the platform which takes into account individual skills in problem solving, self-assessment activities and collaboration through asynchronous discussions. The effectiveness of the model proposed is supported by the positive results and feedback in terms of satisfaction and achieved learning goals.

Several Massive Open Online Courses have been developed to support three main actions: guidance to the University offer, automated self-testing of basic knowledge, self-paced review of fundamental disciplinary concepts learned in high school; all of them are useful to help students successfully attend scientific courses of the first year of University. A key feature of the Project is the continuous open-access to the platform. Contents are built according to educational models grown thanks to the experience and the research in e-learning carried out by the University, especially in the use of an accessible learning management system integrated with an advanced computing environment, an automated assessment system and a web conference system to enhance teaching and learning. In this paper, the adopted methodologies are discussed, the obtained results are presented and future developments are proposed in light of relevant data collected from the platform usage and feedback received by users.
