This study investigated the experiences and expectations of unpaid caregivers who were members of a nonprofit social support organisation. Design and Methods. Colaizzi’s phenomenological exploration was followed. Data were saturated after 15 in-depth individual interviews at a centre for people affected with dementia. Findings. The themes reported with the COREQ checklist were contributory to caregiver burden, the escalation of dementia symptoms, changes in family roles, psychological distress, social challenges, membership in a social network, and developing effective coping skills. Practice Implications. Access, availability, and continuity of psychosocial support programs are vital for the wellbeing of people affected with dementia.

The objective of our phenomenological research study was to determine the reasons for and consequences of perioperative communication failures and to seek recommendations for improvement. Fourteen perioperative nurses participated in this study. We conducted in‐depth interviews with a semi‐structured questionnaire following Colaizzi's seven‐step methodology to extract themes. We organized the themes into categories: causes, consequences, and recommendations for preventing communication failure. Some themes for causes were inadequate time for preoperative preparation, lack of personnel, and disruptive behaviors of physicians. Consequences of communication failure were decreased staff retention, avoidance of colleagues, threats to patient safety, and intra‐team violence. Two recommendations included enforcing institutional regulations and creating team spirit. The study revealed that nu...

Background: Staff nurse DI is important because it affects retention and recruitment, job satisfaction, accountability, autonomy, collaboration, and patient outcomes. DI is an international nursing issue and comparing results with another country can be instructive. Method & Results: Staff nurses from US (N=163) and staff nurses from Turkey (N=50) were surveyed about their perceived levels of DI using the Decisional Involvement Scale. The sample had an average age of 38.8 years, and 14.6 years at the organization. A statistically significant difference was found (p < .01 for all results) between the two samples for overall actual and preferred DI; and the subscales related to actual and preferred unit staffing, quality of professional ...

Preferred decision making levels reached a level of being equally shared for staffing in the US sample and collaboration for the Turkey sample. The most difference in actual and preferred DI with both samples was staffing and support staff practice. Implications for Practice: Staff nurses want more decision making involvement then they have. Organizations need to review their shared governance structure to enhance staff nurse decisional involvement. Discussion will include how leadership can impact the areas of needed improvement in decisional involvement.

Two recommendations included enforcing institutional regulations and creating team spirit. The study revealed that nurses believe that institutional regulations should not only be present but enforced. Further, nurses believe that strengthening employees' interpersonal skills is essential to preventing communication issues. C ommunication failures are responsible for approximately one-third of unwanted events and medical errors. 1-3 Perioperative teams are particularly at risk for miscommunication because professionals from multiple disciplines are involved in a patient's fast-paced care. Rare consequences can be as severe as patient death or wrong-side or wrong-site surgery. More frequently, consequences can include • cancellations of surgical procedures; • unnecessary diagnostic interventions; • compromised anesthesia risk management; • surgical count failures; • prolonged anesthesia induction; • prolonged waiting time for patients and their relatives; • increased workload; and • procedure delays, which have been associated fundamentally with communication failure. 4-6 Communication failures can occur during all phases of surgical care. 4,5,7 In a 2013 study, researchers examined ratings of safety culture in 22 hospitals by 53 surgeons, 102 nurses, and 29 OR administrators.
