The study was aimed at comparing the obtained results with those from the pioneering work of Budtz-Jorgensen and Knitter. By using a twin Frisch grid ionization chamber for fission fragment detection and a neutron scintillator (NE213) for the detection of neutrons, a total of about 107 neutron coincidences were registered. The fission-fragment kinetic energies were measured using a fast (80 MHz) waveform digitizer that provided 10-bit amplitude resolution. Standard analog NIM modules were used for neutron time-of-flight and pulse shape measurements. A time-to-digital converter (TDC) with 1-ns resolution and a pair of gated charge-to-digital converters with 12-bit amplitude resolution were also used. The fission fragment signals were analyzed by means of digital signal processing algorithms. Data on prompt fission neutron energies were obtained by using a time-of-flight (TOF) spectrum unfolding procedure applicable to list-mode data.

Research paper thumbnail of Low counting rate measurement on thermal neutron induced fission using cross-correlation technique

The measurement procedure based on the continuous thermal neutron beam modulation with a mechanic... more The measurement procedure based on the continuous thermal neutron beam modulation with a mechanical chopper was developed for delayed neutron yield measurement of the thermal neutron induced fission of [Formula: see text]Np. The idea of the procedure is similar to that widely used in modern computer communications to prevent unauthorized data access. The data is modulated with a predefined pattern before transmission to the public network, and only the recipient that has the modulation pattern is able to demodulate it upon receipt. For thermal neutron induced reaction applications, the thermal neutron beam modulation pattern was used to demodulate the measured delayed neutron intensity signals on the detector output, resulting in nonzero output only for the detector signals correlated with the beam modulation. The comparison of the method with the conventional measurement procedure was provided, and it was demonstrated that the cross-correlation procedure has special features making...

The goal was to check a new revised data analysis software with fission fragment (FF) kinetic energy corrections after prompt fission neutron (PFN) emission. The revised software was used to reanalyze old data measured in EC-JRC-IRMM, where 252Cf(sf) reaction was investigated. Both measurements were done using similar twin Frisch grid ionization chamber for fission fragment detection with equivalent NE213 fast neutron detector. About 0.5*106 FF with PFN coincidences have been analyzed in both measurements. The fission fragment kinetic energy, mass and angular distribution were investigated along with prompt neutron time of flight and pulse shape analysis using a six channel synchronous waveform digitizer (WFD) with sampling frequency of 250 MHz and 12 bit resolution in the 235U(nth,f) reaction. Correlated FF kinetic energies, their masses, and the angle of the fission axes in 3D Cartesian coordinates can be determined from analysis of the heights and shapes of the pulses induced by the FFs on the anodes of the TIC. These anodes were designed to consist of isolated [Formula: see text]-shaped strips connected to nodes of a chain filter made of serially-connected two-port networks. The double charge division method was implemented by digitizing four waveforms at the endpoints of the chain filters. It was shown that the fission fragments emission point on the target plane may be determined using the measured data. A position-sensitive neutron-induced fission detector for neutron imaging applications with both thermal and low energy neutrons was found as another possible implementation of the designed T...

Pulse shape analysis and time-of-flight information of the neutron detector data was used to separate the prompt neutron emission from the γ-ray background from the fission process. The determination of the neutron spectrum and multiplicity is rather complicated due to the setup of the experiment. Different intermediate results are shown, however, the full data analysis is still ongoing.

The signal processing algorithms provided as recursive one-or multi-step procedures which can be easily programmed using modern computer programming languages. The influence of the number of bits of the sampling analogue-to-digital converter to the final signal-to-noise ratio of the spectrometer considered. Algorithms for a digital shaping-filter amplifier, for a digital pileup elimination scheme and for ballistic deficit correction were investigated using a high purity germanium detector. The pileup elimination method was originally developed for fission fragment spectroscopy using a Frisch-grid back-to-back double ionisation chamber and was mainly intended for pileup elimination in case of high alpha-radioactivity of the fissile target. The developed pileup elimination method affects only the electronic noise generated by the preamplifier. Therefore, the influence of the pileup elimination scheme on the final resolution of the spectrometer investigated in terms of the distance between piled-up pulses. The efficiency of developed algorithms compared with other signal processing schemes published in literature.

With this instrument we aim at the simultaneous measurement of pre- and post-neutron masses, avoiding prompt neutron corrections. From the simultaneous measurement of pre- and post-neutron fission-fragment data the prompt neutron multiplicity may be inferred as a function of fragment mass and total kinetic energy. In order to arrive at a mass resolving power ΔA < 2, ultra-fast and radiation hard time pick-up detectors based on artificial diamond material are under investigation. We report about the timing resolution of these detectors obtained with fission fragments, and discuss the first experiment with a single (v, E) version of the VERDI spectrometer performed at the Budapest Research Reactor.
