The impact of these waste has environmental, social as well as economical adverse effects. While common and easier method of C&D waste management in Sri Lanka has been dumping in landfills, application of recycled C&D aggregates in construction industry has been implemented successfully in developed countries. The study focused on evaluating material properties of recycled concrete aggregates (RCA), construction & demolition recycled aggregates (CDRA) in assessing the applicability of these materials as a pavement base or sub-base construction material. Further, the results obtained were compared with the Sri Lanka road authority requirements to assess the applicability and performance. Test samples contained two single graded RCA samples of different nominal sizes (20 mm & 37.5 mm), graded RCA sample, graded CDRA sample and more test samples which were created by blending graded RCA & CDRA in different proportions by weight. The laboratory experiments included particle size distribution (PSD), flakiness index (FI), elongation index (EI), modified proctor compaction test and California bearing ratio (CBR) test. The results indicated the suitability of RA to replace conventional aggregates in pavement base and sub-base construction.

Grinding the raw materials to a fine powder, mixing them in predetermined proportions and burning them under 1400°C temperature in a rotating kiln are the main procedures followed in cement manufacturing process. Properties of clinker highly affect to the quality of the final cement product. Due to this importance, by analysing a sample of clinker important quality parameters of clinker can be measured and these can be used to improve the production by adjusting the process parameters in the kiln which in turn increases rate, quality, stability and compliance of overall process. Current industrial practice is to measure the process parameters by a laboratory test of a random sample taken from the product line in every 2 hours. The kiln operators can use analysed results to improve the above mentioned areas in cement production, but the problem in the current practice is that analysed result is available to the operators with a delay of about 30 to 40 minutes since sample preparation takes a long time during laboratory tests. This paper discusses the potential of machine learning based approach for real time prediction of free lime and propose optimized process parameters to maintain the free lime content within the required range, which would lead to improved quality of cement production while saving energy, time and cost.
