Meeting these expectations for each learner requires that we teach in a developmentally-responsive manner. This includes our being familiar with the nature of the English spelling system, determining what each learner knows about the system, and then providing instruction that stretches but does not frustrate learning. There is a reciprocal relationship between reading and spelling words, and understanding how this relationship develops over time is the key to developmentally-responsive decoding and encoding instruction, as well as to developing every learner's vocabulary.

This reflection describes the nature of this knowledge and how it may be developed through the examination of generative vocabulary knowledge and the role of the spelling system in developing this knowledge. In addition, it explores morphological development and the significant insights and understandings that students should attain: the basic nature of word formation processes, the spelling-meaning connection, the generativity of morphology: roots and affixes, etymology and morphology, and the role of morphological knowledge in learning other languages.

The foundation for such a program is developed based on research investigating older students' tacit (intuitive) and explicit (metalinguistic) knowledge of patterns of derivational morphology and the orthographic expression of these patterns in semantically-related words. Effective spelling instruction powerfully supports the nature and development of the reading process. Effective spelling instruction engages students in examining written words from a variety of perspectives, better enabling them to remember and understand the spelling of words. This knowledge in turn underlies the more rapid and accurate perception of words during reading. The variety of instructional perspectives includes comparing and contrasting words in the search for patterns and the generalizations that apply to the patterns. For example, the rationale underlying the doubling of final consonants in words such as tapped and hopped can be discovered by contrasting these words with taped and hoped. Again, this active search for pattern builds word knowledge that se...

The developmental nature of the reflective concept of "word" in young children (ages 4.... more The developmental nature of the reflective concept of "word" in young children (ages 4.0 to 1.8) was investigated, and the degree to which these developmental aspects of metalinguistic awareness correspond to levels of cognitive development as described by Piaget (preoperational, transitional, and cognitive operational) was studied. Results showed that a conscious awareness of the structural and significatory aspects of words follow what Papandropoulou and Sinclair have termed "a long and slow elaboration" characterized by an initial inexact notion equating "a word" with the totality of an utterance to the conceptualization of a word in terms of component letters. It is suggested that the printed word, by virtue of being a stable, ilobjectified" referent, plays a significant role in turning the child's conscious attention to language as an opaque object of study. Implications for instruction are offered. In order to deal with the requirements o...

His emphasis on a particular type of explicit phonics instruction, however, arises in part from his attitude toward the spelling system of English - its “pitiless disorder” that is “bizarre and ornery.” This attitude is based on the position that spelling systems should represent sounds consistently. This response 1) briefly describes an alternate perspective, accepted by most linguists who have studied English orthography, in which both sound and meaning are more regularly represented than is commonly assumed; and 2) addresses the aspects of beginning reading instruction from which the approach to phonics instruction that McWhorter espouses must be considered.
