Social Work - Perceptions for a New Era [Working Title]
Social work faculty roles are complex and multi-faceted, characterized by both satisfaction and c... more Social work faculty roles are complex and multi-faceted, characterized by both satisfaction and challenge. In the post-COVID landscape, new faculty members in particular experience physical and existential isolation and uncertainty; realities that impact their experiences as members of their academic communities. This chapter discusses the practice and research implications of a learner-centered peer mentor program—now in its third year--in which new faculty are paired with more experienced faculty volunteers (from various disciplines). The Peer Mentor Program is an integral part of new faculty orientation, a year-long effort. Mentorship “pairs” have flexibility to create relationships that meet their specific interests and needs. Moreover, the value of reciprocity and mutual aid is built into the program: peer mentors learn from new faculty and new faculty learn from peer mentors. An additional core element of the program is the virtual group check-ins with peer mentor volunteers. ...

This article proposes a model for rape survivor groups that encompasses the participatory researc... more This article proposes a model for rape survivor groups that encompasses the participatory research model in the context of feminist ideology and strategies. The use of a participatory research model for rape survivor groups can be expected both to heal and to produce evidence of the recovery process. In this model, groups design a protocol for writing and disseminating their personal stories of overcoming the trauma of rape. The conceptualization is illustrated by excerpts of experience-based, aggregated group processes that provide guidance for conducting participatory research for rape survivors. Most broadly, this essay is my mission, as a white teacher, to examine my teaching process as a w... more Most broadly, this essay is my mission, as a white teacher, to examine my teaching process as a way to understand and improve my work with students, particularly black adult students. Throughout these pages, I show examples of my teaching journal as well as examples of student reading reflections during a semester of teaching Cultural Competency in Human Services to a class of mostly black, African American and Caribbean American adult students, pursuing undergraduate degrees in Human Services.  These excerpts combined with my thinking, questioning, and wondering in response to these examples, I begin a conversation about race, racism, power and privilege, identity and history, topics that are often unspoken or invisible for faculty specifically, but not exclusively, white faculty. This article describes Open Mic on Mentoring Practices, a mostly online and occasionally in-perso... more This article describes Open Mic on Mentoring Practices, a mostly online and occasionally in-person discussion group for faculty and professionals at a geographically dispersed public college serving adult students. The evolution, purpose, membership, and themes present in the group discussions are explored. Specific group dynamics of Open Mic follow, including the role of parallel process, mutual aid and reciprocity, are addressed, with attention to their relevance for adult learners. Finally, the paper ends with a discussion of challenges, surprises, and recommendations for replication or adaptation of Open Mic groups.

Being guests in a host system, a school-based health program (SBHP), presents social workers with... more Being guests in a host system, a school-based health program (SBHP), presents social workers with complex challenges that underscores the need for regular, supportive supervision. Group supervision is especially useful in bridging this gap, reducing isolation, and uniting a social work team dispersed across four different schools. This article reports on efforts to strengthen a social work component in a four-unit SBHP through the creation of a bi-weekly supervision group. Due to the hierarchical mixed membership of field instructors, interns and program administrator, this group addressed challenges and opportunities around role, authority, and power dynamics.

For 7 years the group flourished, providing clinical and emotional support for social work staff and interns. During a time of economic hardship, the program faced the threat of closing, and, in response the group transformed itself from a clinical supervision
