Before and after completion of the 10-week intervention, 32 participants filled out self-report questionnaires on trait mindfulness, self-regulation, and perceived stress. We hypothesized that selfreported mindfulness and self-regulation would significantly increase, and perceived stress would significantly decrease, as a result of participation in the treatment intervention. Paired t-tests revealed a significant decrease (p < .05) in perceived stress and a significant increase (p < .001) in healthy self-regulation. No significant differences were found on self-reported mindfulness. Results suggest that mindfulness-based interventions are feasible for incarcerated adolescents. Limitations and future research are discussed.

Purpose Here, we review evidence bearing on the utility of meditation to facilitate the achievement of traditional educational goals and to enhance education of the “whole person.” Research Design We examine how meditation practices may help foster important cognitive skills of attention and information processing, as well build stress resilience and adaptive interpersonal capacities through a review of the published research literature. Conclusions/Recommendations We offer directions for future research, highlighting the importance of theory-based investigations, increased methodological rigor, expansion of the scope of education-related outcomes studied, and the study of best practices for teaching meditation in educational settings.

Defining mindfulness as the awareness that arises through intentionally attending in an open, caring, and discerning way, the chapter proposes three core mindfulness elements: intention, attention, and attitude. It explores the potential application of mindfulness to primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention. The chapter looks at the impact of mindfulness on health promotion and examines mindfulness as a secondary prevention strategy, particularly in hypertension and diabetes. It then addresses tertiary prevention and the impact of mindfulness in chronic disease. Lastly, mindfulness as a preventive strategy for psychological well-being is explored. Overall, there is strong evidence suggesting that mindfulness is positively associated with healthy lifestyle as well as improvements in depressive symptoms, stress, anxiety, quality of life, physical outcomes, and positive psychological health.

In Mindful Discipline, internationally recognized mindfulness expert Shauna Shapiro and pediatrician Chris White weave together ancient wisdom and modern science to provide new perspectives on parenting and discipline. Grounded in mindfulness and neuroscience, this pioneering book redefines discipline and outlines the five.

Though a growing body of research focuses on formal mindfulness practice as integrated into mindfulness-based interventions, preliminary research offers insight into the benefits of mindful movement as an informal practice. This chapter seeks to explore these benefits with particular attention to the physiological and interpersonal dimensions of mindfulness that are enhanced by mindful movement and dance. We present mindful dance as a potential nonclinical intervention for clients to increase mindfulness, positive affect, and social connectedness and as a tool for therapists to develop deeper levels of presence and awareness in their “dance” with clients.

We begin our exploration of mindfulness training for teachers by offering an operational definition of mindfulness. We then address integrating mindfulness into the lives of teachers as it serves three broad purposes: (1) self-care, (2) becoming a more mindful, reflective teacher, and (3) developing a sound foundation for delivering mindfulness-informed or mindfulness-based instruction to students. We then review available curricula, resources, and recommendations for teachers who wish to incorporate mindfulness training and practices into their classrooms. Finally, we explore future directions for research and offer seven key criteria as a platform for future studies.
