However, questions have been raised regarding its effectiveness. Thus, this paper addresses one of the environmental sustainability issues specifically Borkena river pollution. Furthermore, it addresses the causes and effects of Borkena river pollution on environmental sustainability. By employing an exploratory approach, formative analysis and conclusions are made. As a result, Borkena River is found highly depleted due to wastes from households, institutions and industries. Mountainous farming, lack of environmental protection measures, alien weed, informal settlement, poor waste management system and inappropriate utilization of river resources are the major causes of Borkena River pollution. As a result, the river pollution affects the environmental sustainability in the area of natural resources, biodiversity and human ecology at large. Thus, the research outlines the following directions to be implemented for protecting Borkena River from pollution and maintaining environmental sustainability. Among these, (1) revisiting the rivers depletion and the extent of environmental pollution on a broader scale, (2) policy revision should be considered in responding river pollution and environmental sustainability measures, (3) expanding best environmental protection practices in Borkena river side, and (4) reconsidering river rehabilitation through realizing its economic benefits for the local community.

This research assessed the trends and actors of Borkena river water governance. Borkena is major tributary of Awash River that originated from South Wollo, Kutaber Woreda. The research use qualitative research approach and data were gathered from both primary and secondary sources. Based on the data, the research found the households and institutions around the river contributed for the depletion of the river water. There is clear policy and practice gap where weak institutional linkages exacerbate the river pollution from bad to worst. The research found that Borkena River serves for the social and economic need of large number of households in the basin. However, the river is found ownerless where no specifically identified government offices are responsible for the river governance at local level. Thus, the river suffers from disposals of industries, companies and households wastes. The river pollution is the result of the absence of planed and systematic solid and liquid wastes management mechanisms from the upper to the lower basin. Based upon the finding, the researchers suggest three areas of intervention using government bureaucracy and other civic organizations. These are: (1) revising the policy documents and establishing specific river governing body at local levels; (2) Expanding good experiences of riverside basin protection in the area; and Intensive awareness creation about waste management and preserving river water needs to be implemented to improve the surrounding communities' socioeconomic wellbeing that enable Borkena river clean and viable for future.

Accordingly, the study is objected to identify the Lithologic units of the area and conduct mapping the metamorphic terrain in the study area. In light of this, we have used the general structural features of the terrain since it does not follow the contour lines as other Lithologic units (e.g. sedimentary and volcanic). In order to pursue this, we have conducted road geology with our instructors which paved the way for our field work. After this, we located the area on the topographic map and selected traverse lines along east-west directions which are perpendicular to the lithologies. Lastly, samples in different stations have been taken. While our field works, we used different geological equipments for the study. For instance, compass geological hammer, hand lens, rock sack, photo camera, topo map, and meter. The study has identified six lithological units. These are slate, phyllite, spotty phyllite, meta breccias, meta dolostone and granitic units. These units have varieties of structural features such as faults, minor folds, lineation, cracks, joints, foliations, veins, fracture, bedding, laying etc of various rock assemblages. We have found that the area has highly exposed metamorphic lithologies having different structures as well as rich of mineralization. The area is interesting site for scientist (geologists) and researchers the fact that it has excellent outcrops and exposures of the metamorphic-plutonic rocks. As a result of this, understanding of the metamorphic-plutonic units and its structural settings in the area is possible. And it has mineralization zones; hence this has tremendous economic advantage, scientific and extensive studies have to be done in the area to explore the existing minerals.

To this end qualitative methodology was employed to gather data from secondary sources. For this purpose journal Articles, official documents, constitution and other legal documents and policies were used. Based upon the data the study revealed that the post 1991 FDRE Constitution espouse new democracy friendly laws and orders which contain detail lists of human rights, introduction of multi-party politics and commencement of democratic institutions which are amicable development for democratization process in the country. However, there are problems in implementing these opportunities on the grounds. Among others, the 2005 election aftermath political and legal measures (CSO Law, Press Law and Anti-Terrorism Law), authoritative nature of Ethiopian politics, weakness of actors in democratization process, Political polarization among political parties, weakness of democratic institutions and corruption are the major challenges to the realization of democratization process in Ethiopia. Hence, the study implies the need for reforming the 2005 election aftermath politico-legal measures on the one hand and strengthens actors in democratization process and democratic institutions on the other hand.
