The effect of thyroid hormones on lipid metabolism is well known, whereas the effect on electrolytes and minerals has not been well established and also the underlying mechanisms not well understood. Thyroid hormones regulate the activity of sodium potassium pumps in most of the tissues. The higher prevalence of thyroid disease in women suggests that estrogen might be involved in the pathophysiology of thyroid dysfunction. With this background the present study was undertaken to assess the alterations in the levels of serum electrolytes in hyperthyroid, hypothyroid & euthyroid female patients. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The present study was conducted in female patients who attended medicine outpatient Department of S. N. Medical College & HSK Hospital, Bagalkot. Thyroid hormones were estimated by chemiluminiscence method. Electrolyte levels (Na, k & Cl) were measured by ion select...

Comprehensive estimates of the global cancer burden in adolescents and young adults (aged 15-39 years) are lacking. To address this gap, we analysed results from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) 2019, with a focus on the outcome of disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs), to inform global cancer control measures in adolescents and young adults. Methods Using the GBD 2019 methodology, international mortality data were collected from vital registration systems, verbal autopsies, and population-based cancer registry inputs modelled with mortality-to-incidence ratios (MIRs). Incidence was computed with mortality estimates and corresponding MIRs. Prevalence estimates were calculated using modelled survival and multiplied by disability we...

Also it is proposed thatunderutilization of glucose is associated with changes in lipid profile. Lipoprotein (a) [Lp (a)] is regarded as an independent indicator of risk development of vascular disease which is also a diabetic complication. Changes in lipid profile are also well related with severity of DM as adjudged by glycated Hb (HbA1c). Objectives: The study intends to find the association between Lipid profile, Lp (a) and HbA1c levels in type 2 diabetic patients. Methods: A case-control study was conducted in Adichunchanagiri Institute of Medical Sciences, B.G.Nagara, Karnataka from 1 Jan to 15 June 2012. Study involved 80 participants of which 40 were patients admitted with diagnosis of DM and other 40 were healthy controls. Blood samples were collected in fasting state and analyzed for FBS, PPBS, HbA1c, TAG, VLDL, HDL, LDL and Lp(a) and values were tabulated for statistical evalu...

Many assays have been developed for measurement of LDL levels and have shown reasonable accuracy as compared to reference method but still not cost effective and cannot be affordable by majority of laboratories. Laboratories use the cost effective Friedewald’s formula for calculating the LDL instead of direct assay which give near to accurate value but has its own limitations. In recent days many newer formulae have come up with lesser limitations and here an attempt is made to evaluate these formulae and to correlate with direct measurement of LDL. Methodology: It’s a cross sectional study. Sampling technique is Census method and involves sample size of 1020 cases. The entire lipid Parameters (LDL, HDL, TC, and TG) were estimated using Kits purchased by Roche /Cobas and then LDL also calculated using vari...
