Studies indicate that companies that do not follow the technological tendencies will possibly cease to exist in the next years. Besides, Digital Transformation has a direct impact on relations and forms of consumption. However, although much have been said about this topic, the literature has not established yet a common ground about the meaning of Digital Innovation and Digital Transformation. The purpose of this paper is to identify, analyze and synthesize the various aspects of the main concepts related to Digital Innovation and Transformation (DI&T). We have done a quasi-systematic review of the literature, generating as a primary outcome a list of the main constructs related to DI&T, as well as their definitions. Our main contribution is a map that conceptualizes and relates DI and DT that could be used as a base for future researchers.

As a single, enmeshed reality, the fully integrated technologies strengthen social connectedness and promote face-to-face interaction and local community ties through social, mobile, analytics, cloud, and the Internet of Things. The Internet, digital technologies, and digital sensors shape the growing interconnectedness of people, organizations, and machines as the basis of the digital economy. However, the popularity of digital transformation research and the heterogeneous fields of application demand a consolidated overview of digital technology. Based on a literature review and a taxonomy-development approach, this paper presents a taxonomy of digital technology in the context of digital transformation: its characterisation, its roles/impacts, and the digital platform and ecosystem components. Overall, we aim to contribute to a better understanding of digital technology in digital transformation research

Nevertheless, it is interesting to notice that most novelty is based mainly on processes, rather than on technology. Although the literature seems to agree the digital transformation and innovation (DT&I) and business process management (BPM) connection is almost mandatory, there is not a clear and precise conceptualization of the relationship of these two domains. Therefore, the authors argue that a conceptual model is needed to organize the knowledge raised on these subjects structurally. This article presents an ontology to provide a formal and explicit specification as a common understanding basis of this topic. This research contributes to leveraging the BPM in the digital age, exploring their relationship, investigating to what extent the BPM characteristics initiatives affect—and are affected by—DT&I. The authors evaluated the proposal using a public domain busine...

New technologies are being incorporated continuously into our day-to-day life, introducing new shapes for traditional and original kinds of businesses. Nevertheless, it is interesting to notice that most novelty is based mainly on processes, rather than on technology. A DT initiative should start with conceptual modeling to organize and structure knowledge of its scope. However, there is not a specific proper language to model DT initiatives. Based on an extensive literature review, we propose an Ontology - the DI-BPM-Onto - with this purpose. The ontology proposed conceptualizes three aspects: Digital Transformation and Innovation (DT&I), Business Process Management Contextual Factors, and Digital Technology, which are independent layers, but orthogonally related. On the other side, modeling tools like the well-known standard ArchiMate are widely used by companies to provide an unambiguous understanding of their businesses, and already support the description, analysis, and visualization of most enterprise architecture (EA) elements. Therefore, in this paper, to better model DT initiatives, we propose a Reference Model that extending the ArchiMate with the main concepts of DT identified in the DI-BPM-Onto to better model DT&I initiatives and to discuss to what extent ArchiMate would support the implementation of DT&I initiatives. A practical modelling scenario concerning UBER is used to carry out a preliminary evaluation of the proposal.

It was developed using a design science research approach, building on the ISO/IEC 330xx family of standards to provide structure to a set of digital transformation processes identified using a systematic literature review. At a time when companies look for orientation to navigate their digital transformation, the contribution of this paper is a framework, from a process perspective, rooted in solid scientific concepts, to guide practitioners on how to assess digital transformation initiatives.

Digital innovation has forced companies to change some well-established business processes. Thus,... more Digital innovation has forced companies to change some well-established business processes. Thus, incorporate information technology into business processes is not enough. We argue that both BPM role and related capabilities might need to be re-interpreted for the digital future. In this sense, the BPM discipline must identify relevant instruments for building on new ways to analyze, understand and support such transformations. This paper examines the results from a car rental company case in the light of DTI thus we investigated: (i) the factors that led the decision to digitalize the process; (ii) how the digital transformation was conducted; (iii) the characteristics of the industry, the business itself, the transformed process, and the type of innovation implemented. The main contribution of this paper is to demonstrate that DT&I-BPM-Onto supports taking a broader picture of a process transformation case. Moreover, we provide insights and practical lessons for future projects and further research.
