Collective, non formal – informal, formal types of learning (learning drivers) contribute to shape the competitiveness of firms, especially in the present knowledge-based economy, where the necessity to respond effectively to frequent external shock (demand, technology, competitive environment driven) emphasizes the importance of being flexible and quickly adaptive. Nevertheless, focusing on learning capacities, and particularly on human skills, often leads to forget the existence of another equal important factor, which increases the explanatory power of the learning drivers: firms’ innovative intensity. This work explores the conjoint effect of learning drivers and innovative intensity on firms’ performance by showing some evidences from statistical data ...

Explorative in nature, the paper takes advantage of unique data on the Danish labor market (i.e. IDA) to investigate labor mobility patterns for the two selected industries and to detect internal differences within industry segments and regarding creative intensive and invention activities in particular. We use the music industry as a proxy for the entertainment industries.

The proliferation of wellness centres, holistic retreats, Spas, spiritual pilgrimages, complementary and alternative therapies is nowadays unprecedented. Nevertheless, the analysis of the economics and management of the wellness sector is scarce. This work aims to fill this gap, analysing in details a special type of emergent segment of wellness tourism in Italy: the agri-Spa. Our paper investigates this phenomenon providing an interesting picture of the agri-Spa business in Italy. Our arguments are supported by an empirical analysis based on data coming from a sample of 1572 firms operating in 2010 in Italy.

The chapter aims to deepen this important, but still understudied aspect of the economic growth potential of creative industries, using Egypt and the ICT sector as the empirical setting. The analysis of data using the fDi Database and Zephyr on greenfield investments and mergers and acquisitions confirm the relevance of the phenomenon. Moreover, three empirical illustrations allowed the identification of three ideal-types, represented by the three cases selected for the analysis: (1) a start-up that attracted foreign venture capital investments from Silicon Valley (the case of Wuzzuf); (2) a start-up that attracted foreign companies’ investments from Silicon Valley (the case of SysDSoft); (3) a start-up that attracted foreign and local investments from risk cap...

Design/methodology/approach The empirical setting is the Conegliano Valdobbiadene Prosecco Superiore DOCG wine cluster in the Veneto region of Northeast Italy. Data was collected through the administration by telephone of a semi-structured questionnaire to 37 oenologists, sales managers, production managers and owners of bottling companies in the district. The authors used social network analysis tools to map knowledge networks in the Prosecco cluster. Findings The results shed light on the importance of singling out knowledge networks in clusters at the value chain level to aid practitioners and researchers in this field. In fact, this research proves the existence of knowledge networks specificities related to the various phases of the production process. Research limitations/implications Th...

Entrepreneurship Ecosystem in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA)

In less than 6 years the Egyptian Entrepreneurial Ecosystem (EE) managed to draw regional and global attention in terms of business support, funding, Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) and research. Tech-savvy and multi-lingual youth are the Egyptian EE’s largest strength, and more constituents are joining the EE every hour. Despite the fact that more support services and stakeholders are emerging to promote entrepreneurship in Egypt, scattered efforts, uncoordinated initiatives, fragile legal framework and low-quality education do not seem to move the nascent ecosystem into a growth stage. Using a rigorous analysis, we conclude that the Egyptian EE is still at birth stage and most of its constituents are mostly fledgling organizations. The legal framework is inefficient. The market lacks genuine ideas and mentors. Venture capitalists still lack expertise, scientific research is not authoritative. Innovation infrastructure is underdeveloped, most of the patents are registered offshore, IP protection is practically inexistent. More worryingly the country is unable to retain its most qualified talents who immigrate to more robust innovation environments. To date, entrepreneurship in Egypt is unable to create sustainable employment or impact national economic growth. However, there is a significant opportunity for improvement. In this chapter we assess the Egyptian EE, then present a set of recommendations for policy makers and investors.

Research paper thumbnail of Selling circularity: Understanding the relationship between circularity promotion and the performance of manufacturing SMEs in Italy

This study investigates the communication intensity of companies adopting circular economy (CE) practices, here with the aim of assessing the extent to which promoting circularity increases their economic performance (measured as return on assets—ROA), disentangling this effect for the different quantiles of the ROA distribution. Employing a unique web-scraped dataset of companies’ websites, we captured and analyzed the online promotional efforts of a sample of Italian manufacturing companies engaged in CE practices. Our results show that small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) that fall into the lower-medium–performing range might benefit from intensively signaling their circularity on their website. Theoretical and managerial implications are put forward.

Design/methodology/approach The study is based on a quantitative analysis related to an original data set of 206 Italian manufacturing firms specializing in made in Italy industries and adopting Industry 4.0 technologies. A case study of a district firm is also presented to explain the rationale of investment strategies and results obtained. Findings The analysis shows that there are differences between district and non-district firms when Industry 4.0 technology investments are concerned (higher investment rate in big data/cloud and augmented reality for district firms than non-district ones). In contrast to a breakthrough view of the fourth industrial revolution, the study suggests that 4.0 technologies emphasize the peculiarities and competitiveness fa...
