Parties involved continuously try to beat competitors by creating the possibility to accommodate ships bigger than existing ones. With information available on vessel particulars and new building prices for fully cellular Post-Panamax container ships reaching up to about 14,000 TEU it is possible to conduct a proper statistical analysis of economies of ship size. Results show that economies of ship size, expressed as the elasticity of costs as a function of ship size, differ only slightly from those of ships up to Panamax.

Statistical tests are applied using a 10-year time series of aggregate transhipment flows between 15 transhipment ports and 9 feeder regions. Tests of Logit Models with regression analysis show that variables such as feeder costs, mainline port access costs and Mohring effects are statistically significant. Comparison of the results with those of earlier research concerning the Northwest European transhipment market shows that the outcomes correspond rather well in terms of the resulting choice or demand elasticity. It also shows that the value of this elasticity in some cases compares rather well with those estimated in port choice studies for the non-transhipment market concerning Northwest European, US and Chinese container trades. In an earlier publication by one of the authors the impact of increasing containership size on unit shipping costs up to 20,000 TEU was elaborated. This paper expands in two directions. The first is to include ship design parameters to support statements on future containership particulars with respect to size, dimensions, speed and engine power, rather than just extrapolating them either explicitly or implicitly. The second is to include external costs related to the effects of CO 2 emissions on climate change. Discussions on the monetary value of these emissions are in full swing. This paper therefore applies a plausible bandwidth. Results of the analysis show that economies of ships size continue to exist for ships up to 25,000 TEU, but those technical limitations with respect to propulsion, engine power and cavitations put the maximum size of a single propeller ship at a lower level.

Studies indicate that, by 2016, a new port north of Dar es Salaam (Tanzania) should be operational, serving, as a regional hub, the needs of the total (captive and non-captive) hinterland of East African ports. The objective of this article is to assess the economic potential, in terms of logistics costs of alternative hub-port locations. To that effect we first describe the flow of goods in the Nairobi–Durban port ...

The objective of this paper is to improve the earlier models through the use of a nested logit model and further by including new variables. The results show that the nested model is an improvement, that the variable indicating the inland transport balance has a statistically significant impact and that the split of variables into distance dependant and independent components gives no improvement. The model outcomes can be used to assess the impact of interventions in ports, and thereby to serve as a basis for the economic and financial evaluation of port projects.
