The primary aim of this study was to identify risk factors that contributed firefighter suicide o... more The primary aim of this study was to identify risk factors that contributed firefighter suicide or ideation and provide resources for suicide awareness, prevention and follow-up within the department. The problem is that Miami Beach Fire Department (MBFD) has no mechanism in place to identify the risk factors that lead to firefighter ideation and suicide among the firefighter in MBFD An internal survey was used to determine the current mental health state of the department. The study utilized descriptive research methodology involving 74 respondents from MBFD. The approach utilized survey questions that allowed determination of the primary factors affecting firefighter in the department. Anxiety is the primary cause of suicide or ideation in Miami Beach Fire Department that mainly affects the 61% of the firefighters and 64% of the lieutenants. 45% and 73% of the lieutenants and captains indicated to have had a depressed almost daily for more than 2 weeks as experienced by feelings of sadness emptiness or helplessness, and/or observed by others as being tearful. The study result showed captains (56%) and chiefs (50%) are prone to developing addiction and 56% demonstrated to have strong desire to use alcohol and 44% noted a loss of interest in the activities they once enjoyed. The research demonstrated PTSD to be a considerably common issue for the firefighters (49%), captains (56%) and lieutenant (55%). Further, the data revealed that suicide ideation is a considerable problem, particularly, among the lieutenant in Miami Beach Fire Department. Overall, the results showed that 54%, 66%, 36%, 46% and 35% of respondents are showing some form of anxiety, depression, addiction, PTSD, and suicide ideations respectively. The recommendation made was to provide mental health training awareness and a formal program which is consistent with the industry standard.

The paper aims of the article are to demonstrate the issue at it is currently and need for stronger policy that will attend to the gaps that exist in the current policy toward the issue of homelessness in the NY. To achieve the goal, the methods adopted include carrying out systematic literature reviews and drawing from personal observation and experience. First, I will provide a clear introduction that outlines the purpose of the paper. The second section gives systematic literature reviews that details reasons for homelessness in the NY City, increase in a number of homeless, people, agencies involved such as Department of Homeless Service, financing affordable housing programs for single homeless individuals coupled with reasons the issue is experienced more by this population
