Although there have been some recent developments incorporating geography into the analysis of the of MNE studies the longstanding and widespread absence of geography in MNE studies leads to analytical problems. In particular, in the investigation of MNE operations and their interactions with different economic actors and contexts, the use of typical dichotomies, such as home versus host, horizontal versus vertical integration, and determinant versus impact, today prove to be much less effective or relevant than might previously have been the case. More specifically, the fundamental geographical and institutional re-orderings associated with modern globalization mean that nowadays we see increasingly co-dependent and co-evolutionary corporate and geographical networks. Understanding these is essential ...

The analysis is carried out at province level (NUTS 3) for the period 1985-98. Our results seem to support a growing differentiation of the paths of development within the Italian South that has occurred in parallel with the intensification of the EU integration process, producing an area of ‘many Mezzogiorni’.This means that the use of traditional indicators, such as gross domestic product (GDP) per capita, may not be entirely appropriate and, in some cases, may even be misleading for assessing regional backwardness and vulnerability in a bid to achieve greater socioeconomic cohesion within the EU

So far, however, it is rather unclear whether the new paradigm will spur greater socioeconomic cohesion or, on the contrary, stronger territorial polarisation. This paper focuses on the distribution of Italian Ict – producing small and medium enterprises and on the relationship between some structural variables – regional location and industrial sector – and labour productivity levels. The aim is to shed some light on the role that Tic productions might have with respect to the regional divide of the Italian economy, traditionally among the most striking in the European area.

Regional Studies, 2017

Regional economic development has been long conceptualised as a non-linear, interactive and socia... more Regional economic development has been long conceptualised as a non-linear, interactive and socially embedded process: these features were traditionally regarded as spatially mediated and highly localised. However, unprecedentedly fast technological change coupled with the intensification of global economic integration processes has spurred the need to place regional development in a truly open and interdependent framework. Despite substantial progress made by the academic literature, rethinking regional development in this perspective still presents a number of challenges in terms of concepts, empirical evidence and policy approaches. Following an interdisciplinary assessment of how openness and connectivityproxied by one particular of the many cross-border flows, i.e. global investments-interact with regional economic development trajectories, this paper presents a picture of the geography of foreign investments from and to the European regions and its change after the financial and economic crisis in 2008. This simple exercise allows us to shed some initial light on how the operationalisation of regional connectivity can improve our empirical understanding of the evolution of regional economies and the policy approach needed to support their reaction to change.

In fact, the different growth rates characterising the Italian regions are far to be an exception in the Union, where heterogeneities across member states are a reflection of domestic socio-economic disparities re-produced over time. Differences in growth differentials, trade and technological sectoral patterns within Europe at national level call for further intra-border investigations. Existing studies have neglected territorial disaggregations more detailed than the national one. Similarly, although relative large streams of (both theoretical and empirical) literature have investigated the relationship between growth differentials and technology, relative little attention has been devoted to the evolution of technology and trade specialisation. With the aim of offering a place-based perspective on the topic, the paper loo ks at the three Italian macro-regions of the North, the Centre and the South, comparing them wit h the country as a whole. We use an indicator of education-job (mis)matching drawn and adapted from the literature, and apply both ordered logit and probit models with self-sele ction to a dataset on graduates’ entry in the labour market produced by the Italian National Stat istical Institute. Our results suggest that, in line with most previous studies, interregional migr ation contributes to reduce education-job gaps: however, we find that the analysis for Italy as a whole masks stark differences between macro-regions, for which the typical North-South du alism still holds, confirming once more the cumulative and path-dependent nature of regiona l development tr...

These collaborations favour both intended and unintended flows of knowledge and facilitate learning processes between partners from different organisations. Despite the copious literature on localised knowledge spillovers, still little is known about the factors driving the formation of U-I research collaborations and, in particular, about the role that geographical proximity plays in the establishment of such relationships. Using collaborative research grants between universities and business firms awarded by the UK Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), in this paper we disentangle some of the conditions under which different kinds of proximity contribute to the formation of U-I research collaborations, focussing in particular on technological complementarity among the firms participating in such partnerships.

The study aims at probing the spherical shape of "Fortune Chicken" with the use of various fabrics in order to bring out different cultural codes and create a deviation in imagery for assisting immigrants in comprehending the cultural implication of Taiwanese wedding. The concept of "Communicating Across Cultures" can be the foundation for selecting "Fortune Chicken" in wedding. The result of study showed among 60 subjects with different backgrounds, 30 immigrants and 30 Taiwanese, preferred the cultural code imagery of the calico fabric from Taiwan for "Fortune Chicken" with red brocade and gold satin weave among the calicos from Taiwan, Japan and the United Sates.

Our findings, based on the Fourth UK Community Innovation Survey (CIS), provide new insights regarding the relationship between cooperative linkages for innovation and the development of technological capabilities by business units. Firstly, the distinction between competences and capabilities adopted in this paper seems appropriate for going beyond the rather simplistic dichotomy of 'innovative' versus 'non-innovative' firms commonly used in interpreting CIS data. Secondly, we find that the analysis for the UK as a whole masks stark regional differences in terms of intra-and extra-region collaborative linkages and degrees of firms' technological capabilities. These findings may be useful to help policy making to meet the priorities highlighted within the UK Government's framework for Science & Technology.
