Considering that the type of foreign bodies varies depending on diet and custom of each population, the aim of the current paper is to present foreign body aspiration cases treated in three Argentinian pediatric hospitals and to emphasize the need for preventive strategies and necessity of increasing community and healthcare professionals’ knowledge about this problem.

Methods: A Markov state decision model was implemented to evaluate the cost impact of trastuzumab and lapatinib use for a lapse of time of three years in Veneto public hospitals. The Markov model expressed transition probabilities from three different states, comparing in addition the expected deaths and the monthly survival rates in treatment and no-treatment groups, along the lines of previously published studies. Results: From the initial cohort of 267 patients eligible for treatment, stable ones (195) were considered in order to evaluate the impact of the targeted therapy on overall progression of the disease. Trastuzumab administration accounted for a regional expense of 2765662 within the 6 months, almost dupl...

Aim: To compare personalized di-etary advice provided to 24 Italian children by a nutrigenetic test based on the recommenda-tions from 2 different, widely employed nutrient profiling (NP) schemes, the USA Health Claims (USAHC) and the Guidelines for Responsible Food Marketing to Children, published by the US Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI); the genetic test-NP agreement regarding 50 com-monly eaten foods has been calculated. Methods: Twelve normal-weight and 12 overweight children were recruited in the Trieste district (North-East Italy), and nutrigenetic testing was of-fered using the G-Diet Nutrigenomic Kit. Variants of 20 genes were tested and perso...

The present study was conducted in order to understand more about consumer attitudes and understanding of portion size information on food and drink products. An experimental trial was performed on mothers and one of their relative. The participants were asked to prepare two meals (one meant for a child, one for an adult), with ingredients measured only with kitchen tools. Participants were stratified by portion size information in two groups, one with labels bearing the “100 gram ” and one with “per portion”. Subsequently, every participant was interviewed on the basis of a questionnaire assessing nutritional and portioning knowledge. When measured the total Kcal of prepared meals after the simulation, an increase of calories was recorded in the group of subjects who prepared foods bearing the100g label, although not statistically significant(p =...

Desarrollo Integral de la Juventud Oaxaqueña (DIJO) is a nongovernmental association which since 1993 has developed programs directed towards the education of children, youth and families in and around the city of Oaxaca. This study was performed from February 2009 to July 2011, and involved a total of 286 children from 1st to 6th grade. The principal aim was to assess the results of the Educational intervention performed in the colonies of Monte Alban, Tlalixtac and Xoxocotlan, Oaxaca, Mexico. Two types of questionnaires were administered to children. The first one, shorter, consisted in 16 questions, divided into 4 areas of investigation: communication, comprehension, artistic expression and development. The second questionnaire was an expanded version of the previous one, administered in Monte Alban colony. When cons...

D... more Together with olive and soybean, canola is one of the most important and diffuse oilseed crops. Due to high oleic acid and antioxidant contents, canola oil shows positive effects on cholesterol, glycemic control, blood pressure and cancer. For these reasons, canola oil can be considered an important food-resource: future scientific research is expected to provide further evidence on adoption of canola oil as a standard dietary choice in healthy subjects as well as a therapeutic strategy in disease treatment.

Nutrition and physical activity represent the major factors influencing energy balance and subsequently weight status. Deciding toward an appropriate intake of all nutrients is seen as necessary to maintain a wholesome lifestyle: among nutrients, sugar plays a major role and its consumption has long been seen as an issue in public health, due to its possible role in displacing or diluting nutrients in the diet and contributing to the epidemic of obesity. A research on Pubmed was assessed to evaluate the impact of confectionery consumption, as sugar source, on the daily energy intake. The studies considered in the current paper generally failed to show that confectionery consumption leads necessarily to a shift of energy intake. Anyway, considering that till now, very few works on this topic were conducted, more researches are necessary to demonstrate the effective influence of confectio...

Objective: The study is aimed at understanding how people value nutritional information on food labels, in particular for front-of-pack labeling. Methods: A phone-assisted survey of 7550 consumers in 16 European countries was conducted. People were asked about their opinion on nutritional information provided at different levels, from the media to public institutions, and their commitment to healthy behavior. The value of pack labeling was estimated using a willingness-to-pay (WTP) elicitation technique. Results: Older age groups (>45 years old), members of a larger family, people of low income or low education, and those who perceived themselves to be obese valued front-of-pack nutritional labeling. WTP estimates across all countries provided an average accepted added price of $4.32 to the overall yearly food expenditure (95% confid...
