The study investigated the effect of single parenting on academic performance of some children in... more The study investigated the effect of single parenting on academic performance of some children in primary schools in Makurdi LGA of Benue State. Three research questions were formulated to guide the study. The study was correlational because the study sought to establish the extent of relationship between single parent’s children and their academic performance. The statistical method used in analyzing the data was the simple percentage. Reliable and validated questionnaires which were designed to elicit information on the questions of study were used. Five primary schools were randomly selected for the study. One hundred respondents from single parent homes were used for the study. 25 respondents were randomly selected from five schools. Results showed a significant relationship between single parents and academic performance of pupils. It was also discovered that low socio-economic status, also had an adverse effect on the academic performance of children from single parenthood.

It has been observed over decades that, poverty forces poor families to send their children to wo... more It has been observed over decades that, poverty forces poor families to send their children to work, which results in a serious problem the world is facing today. Child labour can leave many severe consequences on children and their families. When children work, it does not mean as a standard, they support their families economically, neither all of them get paid for their work since many of them work as bonded labour or as slaves. In addition to that, they face many problems which may cause permanent damage to their childhood. Their education is often ignored by their parents or they may not be aware about their children's educational achievement or academic performance. This paper illustrates how child labour and the factors that influence the activities of child labour continue to be prevalent in Kwande LGA of Benue State. Findings from the study explain the reasons which forces children to work and in turn performed poorly in school. This paper also draws conclusion that governments, societies, and communities should cooperate in a better way with each other to decrease child labour in our society.

The study aimed at analyzing the prospects and challenges of urban livestock farming in Makurdi M... more The study aimed at analyzing the prospects and challenges of urban livestock farming in Makurdi Metropolis, Benue State, Nigeria. The specific objectives were to examine the socioeconomic characteristics of livestock owners in Makurdi Metropolis of Benue state Nigeria; examine the types of livestock commonly kept in the study area; determine the appropriate breed of livestock suitable for keeping in Makurdi Metropolis; determine the prospects of livestock keepers in the study area; and examine the challenges faced by livestock keepers in Makurdi Metropolis. Data were collected from 250 respondents using a structured questionnaire and random sampling technique was used to select them. The findings showed that 44% of the respondents were in the age bracket of 31-40years; 52% were males, while 40.4% had secondary education.Majority of livestock farmers in the Metropolis reared more chickens(24.4%), goats(20.4%), pigs(17.2%) and cattle(16.4%) while the likes of ducks(4.8%), rabbits(7.6%), sheep(5.2%) are reared in small quantities. The finding revealed that local breeds of livestock are more appropriate in Makurdi Metropolis and therefore, most of livestock farmers (46.8%) reared more local breeds as compared to exotic breeds (32.4%) and hybrid (17.2%). The result also showed that livestock keeping was popular and could be harnessed to increase food security. The main challenge of livestock farming were diseases(40.4%), inadequate land for rearing livestock (16%) and lack of feed (9.2%). It was recommended that key stakeholders should address the constraints of diseases, land, finance and risk associated with livestock farming.

The study investigated the influence of cognitive and cultural variables on attitudes of undergra... more The study investigated the influence of cognitive and cultural variables on attitudes of undergraduate students towards entrepreneurship education in Benue State. The research comprised three research questions and three hypotheses. Descriptive survey design was adopted for this study. The population of the study was 6,730 while the sampled size was 673. The sampling technique employ in this study was simple random sampling technique while questionnaire was used to collect data from respondents and the method of analysis was chi-square and simple percentage. Findings from this study revealed that entrepreneurship has become a critical area of discussions the world over due to its perceived role in mitigating the twin challenges of shrinking economies and unemployment as well as the challenges that may affect students’ interest in entrepreneurship education. It was therefore recommended that, more needs to be done by lecturers to help students become more able to identify business opportunities, as part of teaching entrepreneurship education, lecturers need to make the teaching more practical by linking students with institutions that are known to provide technical start-up support so that before the students complete the course they are aware of these institutions and how to use them when they need information about how to start and run their businesses.
