started teaching at the Dentistry Faculty of Havana on February 2 nd , 1962. This biographical sk... more started teaching at the Dentistry Faculty of Havana on February 2 nd , 1962. This biographical sketch is carried out after the 50 th anniversary of her teaching career. Objective: to show her academic, scientific and politic evolution along these years. Methods: this work was made starting for the consultation of her teaching file and data contained in the book Contributions to the History of the Cuban Dentistry by Dr. Felix Companioni Landín. Results: the writing stands out several aspects related to her university studies, teaching and assistance work as well as elements related to her specialty, scientific work and recognitions received along his working life. Conclusions: the life of this outstanding stomatologist reflects her commitment with our revolution and the education of new generations of professionals of the buccal health in both pre and post graduated courses turning her into teacher of teachers of this Centennial faculty.

Introduction: it is important when a new study plan is taking place to perform a curricular asses... more Introduction: it is important when a new study plan is taking place to perform a curricular assessment and improvement of their components. Objectives: to assess the research activity during the first year of Dentistry career and do an improvement proposal. Material and Methods: a pedagogical participative research took places whit a qualitative approach, since April to May of 2012, using the analysis of documents, and the methodological workshop with the staff of professors who teach in the first years. Results: it could be determined that the research activity in the objectives of the year, in the curricular strategy of the computer science and research and in the educational programs for the first year of Dentistry career Plan D was insufficient. Four methodological workshops were carry out which allows to fulfil an improvement proposal. Conclusions: the design of the research activity in the Plan D was insufficient for the first year. A proposal the improvement the research activity were carry out by some methodological workshops.

Introduction: search, retrieval and evaluation of information is an essential component in the pr... more Introduction: search, retrieval and evaluation of information is an essential component in the process of scientific research which requires the development of information competencies among undergraduates as part of the curricular contents, to ensure the participation of all. Objective: design a study program for an elective undergraduate course aimed at developing the information competencies required to deal with learning problems and research tasks. Methods: a pedagogical study was conducted in which review and adaptation was performed of core competencies 1 and 2 as defined in the Information Competency Standards of the Cuban National Health Sciences Information System. Account was taken of the results of research training diagnostics, as well as of the knowledge acquired by first year students. Results: a program was proposed for an elective 32-hour physical attendance course on scientific information search structured into five topics. The program includes the contents per topic, objectives, essential knowledge to be acquired, main skills to develop and the evaluation system. Conclusions: the study program designed includes contents related to the use of the Virtual Health Library of Cuba to search, retrieve and evaluate scientific information, fostering the development of information competencies among undergraduate students.

Introduction: The History of Cuba II syllabus lacks suggestions about bibliography that allow the... more Introduction: The History of Cuba II syllabus lacks suggestions about bibliography that allow the teaching staff to deal with the curricular strategies in the Curriculum "D" in dental studies. Objective: To suggest the use of bibliographies for the treatment of curricular strategies in the subject History of Cuba II in Dentistry. Material and methods: A descriptive pedagogical research was conducted. Methods of document analysis and bibliographic review were used. Results: A total of 33 bibliographies were found, and proposals were made for linking curricular strategies in each of the topics of History of Cuba II syllabus for dental studies. Conclusions: The suggested bibliographies can contribute to the treatment of curricular strategies in the subject History of Cuba II, and favor the comprehensive training of the firstyear dental students.

Introduction: over 50 years the United States of America government has enforced a criminal econo... more Introduction: over 50 years the United States of America government has enforced a criminal economic, commercial and financial blockade against Cuba; it also includes an aggression for the development of the educational system in the island, which is considered one of the achievements of the revolutionary process at international level. Objective: to argue about repercussion of the economic, commercial and financial blockade enforced by the United States of America in the Cuban High Medical Education. Material and Methodo: a thorough bibliographic search was made using key words: ¨economic blockade¨ and ¨medical education´; the report presented by Cuba to the United Nations against the economic, commercial and financial blockade and the newspaper articles was recovered and studied. Development: it was taken into consideration the repercussion of the blockade in the Cuban Education: the displacement through far markets which aid to the excessive payment of charter and the investment in the store of merchandise, scarcity of reagent, row materials, scholar equipment, complementary bibliography and didactic materials, auto motor stock affectation, scarcity of book and the academic interchange between both countries, brain robbery. It is also analyzes their effect in the high medical education (scarcity of medicaments, medical equipment, diagnosis means, medical instruments, spare parts, scientific interchange restriction and the limitation to obtain financial budget to research project and professional up grade) emphasis it is made in the humans resources formation in the odontology area. Conclusions: the economic, commercial and financial blockade of United States of America against Cuba has unfavorably reverberated in the Cuban high medical education.

Objetivos: Caracterizar las condiciones de salud bucal e identificar la relación entre determinantes sociales de salud y la salud bucal. Material y Métodos: Se realizó una investigación descriptiva, el universo quedó conformado por 35 772 individuos y la muestra por 1 569. Para la recolección de la información se aplicó una encuesta diseñada por los autores y el examen de la cavidad bucal: los resultados se muestran en tablas, utilizando frecuencias absolutas como medida de resumen y el estadígrafo Chi cuadrado para la asociación entre las variables. Resultados: El 61,4 % son evaluados con la condición de salud bucal de regular, malas 23,1 % y buenas 15,5 %; 74,5 % de las féminas tiene buena salud bucal, 54,7 % de los ancianos con buenas condiciones, tienen nivel de preuniversitario y los de malas, 35,9 % tienen secundaria básica. El 66,6 % refieren no tener bienestar económico, 57 % exponen no tener satisfechas las necesidades básicas. Conclusiones: Existe una relación significativa entre determinantes sociales estudiadas y las condiciones de salud bucal de adultos mayores del municipio Plaza de la Revolución.

Objetivo: describir los principales descubrimientos relacionados con la historia del lavado de las manos y los cientificos asociados con estos hallazgos. Metodos: se realizo una busqueda sobre la historia del lavado de las manos, en los recursos disponibles en la Biblioteca Virtual de Salud de Cuba. Se consultaron 3 libros, que forman parte de la coleccion presente en la biblioteca de la Facultad de Estomatologia “Raul Gonzalez Sanchez”, 84 articulos de bases de datos como Cumed, Pubmed, Lilacs y Ebsco, de ellos solo se seleccionaron 22 posteriores al ano 1981. Introducción: la obra profesional del Dr. Pablo Valdés fue muy variada y siempre estuvo matizada ... more Introducción: la obra profesional del Dr. Pablo Valdés fue muy variada y siempre estuvo matizada por su gran sentido de la responsabilidad, dedicación y profesionalidad. Objetivo: divulgar la labor docente, investigativa, administrativa entre otros aspectos relevantes de la vida profesional del Dr. Pablo Valdés García. Resultados: se hace un recuento de las principales tareas que asumió como profesor de pregrado y posgrado, jefe del Departamento de Conservadora durante muchos años y otras tareas que su tiempo y entrega así como su gran capacidad intelectual le permitió. En la labor investigativa se destacan algunos estudios que realizó, así como la publicación de sus resultados en revistas cubanas y en libros muy utilizados en la docencia de la estomatología en Cuba hoy en día. Se reseña además su labor como miembro y directivo de diferentes sociedades odontológicas nacionales e internacionales y su participación en diferentes Congresos de Estomatología donde su sola presencia honró a la Escuela de Estomatología Cubana. Conclusión: el Dr. Pablo Valdés García, querido y respetado profesor del departamento de Estomatología Integral ha dejado su huella en varias generaciones de estomatólogos, por constituir un ejemplo como profesor universitario y jefe de departamento.

O bjective: to evaluate the presence of the investigative activity in the curricular project in the Plan D of the dental career. Methods: A qualitative descriptive study was carried out in the faculty of Dentistry “Raul Gonzalez Sanchez”, during the second semester of the 2012-2013 academic course, the analytic-synthetic method and the analysis of documents were used. Results: The study performed could determine that in the professional profile it is not well defined for what type of investigation this professional should be prepared. The designed computer and investigation curricular strategy doesn't contain the abilities and needed knowledges in an explicit way for the performance of the principal type of research to carry out in the primary health program: the Analysis of the Health Situation (ASS). The integrative discipline doesn't contain in an explicit way all the abilities to develop for the student to carry out the ASS. In the objectives of year, only in the 4th year the necessary and pertinent objectives were included to the students needs. Conclusion: the presence of the investigative activity in the curricular project of the Plan D of the dental career is insufficient, because it doesn't contain in an explicit way all the necessary elements to achieve the investigative formation of the students.

Resultados: siete de las veinte asignaturas contribuyen de manera explícita al aprendizaje para e... more Resultados: siete de las veinte asignaturas contribuyen de manera explícita al aprendizaje para el Análisis de la Situación de Salud. Las asignaturas Introducción a la Estomatología General, Promoción de salud, Prevención en estomatología y Epidemiología en Estomatología aportan los conocimientos relacionados con el tema, Atención integral a la familia II, III y a la comunidad lo orientan, realizan, ejecutan y evalúan lo que posibilita la formación de la habilidad. Las asignaturas restantescontribuyen al conocimiento y habilidad para el diagnóstico de los problemas de salud. Conclusiones: las asignaturas de la Disciplina Estomatología Integral contribuyen al aprendizaje para la realización del Análisis de la Situación de Salud Bucal, no obstante debe perfeccionarse su concepción sistémica en la disciplina de manera que el estudiante asimile y ejercite mejor la metodología para ejecutar este tipo de proyectos de intervención comunitaria.

Objective: to evaluate the presence of the investigative activity in the curricular project in the Plan D of the dental career. Methods: a qualitative descriptive study was carried out in the faculty of Dentistry “Raúl González Sánchez”, during the second semester of the 2012-2013 academic course, the analytic-synthetic method and the analysis of documents were used. Results: the study performed could determine that in the professional profile it is not well defined for what type of investigation this professional should be prepared. Introducción: la obra profesional del Dr. Pablo Valdés fue muy variada y siempre estuvo matizada ... more Introducción: la obra profesional del Dr. Pablo Valdés fue muy variada y siempre estuvo matizada por su gran sentido de la responsabilidad, dedicación y profesionalidad. Objetivo: divulgar la labor docente, investigativa, administrativa entre otros aspectos relevantes de la vida profesional del Dr. Pablo Valdés García. Resultados: se hace un recuento de las principales tareas que asumió como profesor de pregrado y posgrado, jefe del Departamento de Conservadora durante muchos años y otras tareas que su tiempo y entrega así como su gran capacidad intelectual le permitió. En la labor investigativa se destacan algunos estudios que realizó, así como la publicación de sus resultados en revistas cubanas y en libros muy utilizados en la docencia de la estomatología en Cuba hoy en día. Se reseña además su labor como miembro y directivo de diferentes sociedades odontológicas nacionales e internacionales y su participación en diferentes Congresos de Estomatología donde su sola presencia honró a la Escuela de Estomatología Cubana. Conclusión: el Dr. Pablo Valdés García, querido y respetado profesor del departamento de Estomatología Integral ha dejado su huella en varias generaciones de estomatólogos, por constituir un ejemplo como profesor universitario y jefe de departamento.

O bjective: to evaluate the presence of the investigative activity in the curricular project in the Plan D of the dental career. Methods: A qualitative descriptive study was carried out in the faculty of Dentistry “Raul Gonzalez Sanchez”, during the second semester of the 2012-2013 academic course, the analytic-synthetic method and the analysis of documents were used. Results: The study performed could determine that in the professional profile it is not well defined for what type of investigation this professional should be prepared. The designed computer and investigation curricular strategy doesn't contain the abilities and needed knowledges in an explicit way for the performance of the principal type of research to carry out in the primary health program: the Analysis of the Health Situation (ASS). The integrative discipline doesn't contain in an explicit way all the abilities to develop for the student to carry out the ASS. In the objectives of year, only in the 4th year the necessary and pertinent objectives were included to the students needs. Conclusion: the presence of the investigative activity in the curricular project of the Plan D of the dental career is insufficient, because it doesn't contain in an explicit way all the necessary elements to achieve the investigative formation of the students.

Resultados: siete de las veinte asignaturas contribuyen de manera explícita al aprendizaje para e... more Resultados: siete de las veinte asignaturas contribuyen de manera explícita al aprendizaje para el Análisis de la Situación de Salud. Las asignaturas Introducción a la Estomatología General, Promoción de salud, Prevención en estomatología y Epidemiología en Estomatología aportan los conocimientos relacionados con el tema, Atención integral a la familia II, III y a la comunidad lo orientan, realizan, ejecutan y evalúan lo que posibilita la formación de la habilidad. Las asignaturas restantescontribuyen al conocimiento y habilidad para el diagnóstico de los problemas de salud. Conclusiones: las asignaturas de la Disciplina Estomatología Integral contribuyen al aprendizaje para la realización del Análisis de la Situación de Salud Bucal, no obstante debe perfeccionarse su concepción sistémica en la disciplina de manera que el estudiante asimile y ejercite mejor la metodología para ejecutar este tipo de proyectos de intervención comunitaria.
