The aim of this study was to assess the awareness and intention to use maternity services among pregnant women. A facility-based cross-sectional study was conducted from February 2016 to April, 2016 among mothers who attend antenatal care at the Tamale Teaching Hospital, Ghana. Using structured questionnaires, expectant mothers were assessed on knowledge regarding the risks associated with pregnancy as well as delivery and birth plan arrangements. Data quality was ensured via crosschecks and double entry into the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) software version 20.01 for analysis. Demographics (age, ethnicity, education, marital status, occupation, etc) were summarized using frequency tables while the χ 2 test was used to determine associations between respective variables. Variables that displayed significant associations were entered ...

This study sought to explore determinants of obstetric care seeking behavior and facility delivery among expectant mothers attending antenatal clinic at the Tamale Teaching Hospital. A systematic random sampling technique was used to select pregnant women for the study. A structured questionnaire was used to assess their socio-demographic characteristics knowledge regarding the risks associated with pregnancy as well as delivery and birth plan arrangements. Data were analyzed with Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) software version 22. χ 2 test was used to determine associations between respective variables. Variables that displayed significant associations were entered into a multiple logistic regression model to ascertain the strength of association (Odds Ratios) between respective variables. At 95% confidence interval, p-values less than 0.05 were deemed statistically significant. Age (p<...

This study aimed to assess patients’ knowledge of antimalarial treatment (ACT) and its association with patient adherence. A descriptive cross-sectional study design was employed in this study. Data were collected from April to May 2017. Both descriptive and inferential statistics in the form of frequencies, percentages, mean values, standard deviations, and Pearson’s chi-square test were generated by use of Microsoft excel spreadsheet and IBM Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 23. The average age of the respondents surveyed for this study was 42.27 ± 11.09. Adherence level to ACT was 47%. The results showed that there was a significant association between respondents’ knowledge of the efficacy of antimalarial medication (p =0.003), benefits of completing antimalarial ...

In an effort to improve maternal and newborn health (MNH) services, Community Support System (CmSS) is an approach for community involvement and ownership. The objective of the study includes, this study specifically examined support systems on birth preparedness among expectant mothers attending antenatal clinic at Tamale Teaching Hospital. Methods: A facility-based cross-sectional study was conducted from February, 2016 to April, 2016 among mothers who attended antenatal care at Tamale Teaching Hospital, Ghana. A systematic random sampling technique was used to select pregnant women for the study. Using structured questionnaires, the women were assessed on the availability of community support systems during pregnancy and childbirth. Data quality was ensured via crosschecks and double entry into the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) software version 20.01 for analysis. Data were summarized and described using frequency tables. At the 95% confidence interval, a p-value less than 0.05 was statistically significant. Results: About 74.2% of respondents lacked husbands` company to antenatal clinic and 88.4% received no support from community leadership. Conclusions: Based on these findings, it is recommended that an emergency response system at the community level to provide emergency funds, transport, and blood donors be put in place and made known to the public.

However, patients around the world have little or limited knowledge regarding anesthesia. It is in view of that, this study was undertaken to assess patients' knowledge on anesthesia services at a preanesthetic clinic and recovery wards of a teaching hospital in Northern Ghana. Descriptive quantitative survey was used to identify patients' knowledge about anesthesia services with the purpose to observe, describe, and document the situation as it naturally occurs. Data obtained from 100 participants were double entered into Microsoft Excel spreadsheet and validated for data errors. Data were then coded and exported to SPSS version 20.0 for Windows for analysis. Descriptive statistics such as frequencies and percentages were used to describe data. The results showed that 53% of participants were aware of anesthesia services as opposed to 47%. However, 30% of the respondents could not identify the type of anesthesia services, while 68% did not know the route of administration of anesthetic agents. Most importantly, 51% had no idea of what an anesthetist is, while 33% knew nothing about the role anesthetists play in the health delivery system. As a result, 26% thought an anesthetist is the theatre nurse, while 25% were of the view that the doctor doubles as the anesthetist. Anesthetists must therefore make conscious efforts to disseminate information before and after surgeries and follow-up clients who underwent anesthesia to provide for continuity of care. This may include preparation of leaflets, brochures, videos, and handouts to improve patients' knowledge and attitude and to disseminate it to all departments in the hospital where anesthesia services are provided.
