Cellular, mitochondrial respiration requires an adequate supply of oxygen, provided by the air we breathe, after airway conduction, treatment by the lungs, and transport to tissues. At different stages of life, pediatric dentists and orthodontists can intervene in the upper airway, expanding it, which helps with ventilation. The greater airway space, if used, contributes in different ways to the child’s development and the recovery of respiratory problems and should always be present as a weapon that physicians and the population should know. The value of the techniques becomes even more important when applied to children and young people with disabilities who can significantly improve their development and performance. Rapid Maxillary Expansion and Extraoral Traction Appliances are two important pediatric resources to treat these children. Clinical practice of the authors, is discussed, emphasizing the importance of early interv...

The volunteers were impression with addition silicone to obtain an epoxy resin replica of the upper central incisor for the initial surface roughness evaluation using a profilometer and the initial color of the incisors and canines was evaluated with a spectrophotometer after one week of wash-out. After 1 month, the color of the central incisors and canines was measured again, and the volunteers were molded to obtain a second replica to the final roughness analysis. Data were submitted to ANOVA-one way (p≤0.05). The results showed that there was no statistical diff...

For the Dental Surgeon (CD), this moment meant necessary changes in his routine of patient care. Thus, this literature review aims to present prevention recommendations to the CD to control and minimize infection in dental treatment. A bibliographic search was performed in the PubMed, Google academic and SciELO databases, and in each search site the keywords "COVID-19", "dental Practice" and "dentistry" were used. Articles published in 2020 were selected in full and free versions, in English and Portuguese. The findings in the literature highlight the importance of using personal protective equipment, as well as the disinfection of surfaces with 70% alcohol, efficient hand washing before and after treatment, body temperature measurement. Telephone screening and / or clinical questionnaires are recommended. COVID-19 is an emergency worldwide and h...

Background: Individuals with sickle-cell disease have increased susceptibility to infection (rationale). Infection is the most common cause of death for patients with sickle-cell anemia. Dental infection, especially the chronic infection of periodontal disease, may play a role in precipitating sickle-cell disease crisis. Vaso-occlusive pain crises, caused by physical and adhesive entrapment of red cells containing hemoglobin S, and the lung condition acute chest syndrome, are the two most common complications of sickle-cell disease. Recurrent events of severe pain caused by microvascular entrapment of erythrocytes and leukocytes obstruct blood flow and spark organ ischemia. Bone marrow and periosteal ischemia and reperfusion instigate cellular injury, infarction, tissue necrosis, edema, and inflammation. Clinical manifestations are explosive episodes of pain and inflammation - sickle-cell crisis' - often accompanied by fever, leukocytosis, sometimes bone marrow necrosis. Case reports detail sickle-cell crisis precipitated by periodontal infection. Methods: Ninety-two subjects with sickle-cell disease between the two countries, ages 1-62, participated. Complete comprehensive periodontal examinations measured probing depth, clinical attachment level, bleeding upon probing, gingival recession, and calculus. Missing teeth were counted if applicable. Results: U.S. subjects totaled 69 (75 percent of the sample) and 23 (25 percent) were from Brazil. Males totaled 52 (57.14 percent); 39 (42.86 percent) were female. Fisher's exact test was performed. In all groups, prevalence of periodontal disease among individuals with sickle-cell disease was significantly higher (p<0.003). Conclusions: Cross-cultural analysis reinforces our research conclusion that individuals with sickle-cell anemia are at greater risk of periodontal disease. This underscores the need for collaboration among sickle cell survivors, their physicians, and their dentists: early diagnosis and treatment of periodontal disease in sickle-cell patients will show productive benefits regarding sickle-cell crises.
