We observed that NF-kB signaling is attenuated in TSC1-and TSC2-deficient MEFs concomitant with reduced survival following DNA damage or TNFa stimulation. Reconstitution of TSC2 expression in TSC2 2/2 MEFs rescued survival in an NF-kB activity-dependent manner. Furthermore, in TSC2 2/2 MEFs, the rapamycin-mediated inhibition of deregulated mTOR activity restored NF-kB activation and survival. This rapamycin-mediated effect was reversed by inhibition of NF-kB transcriptional activation or by inhibition of ERK1/2 MAP kinase or PI-3K pathways, which lie on signaling cascades that lead to NF-kB activation. These results provide evidence for a crosstalk between the TSC/Rheb/mTOR pathway and the NF-kB induction pathways and indicate that NF-kB functions as an important survival factor that regulates TSC2-dependent cell survival.

The hardness of the coatings as a function of indentation load was determined using a microhardness testing technique. Wear resistance was measured using a reciprocating ball-on-plane test using a hardened 440C stainless steel ball rider. Wear resistance was also measured using ASTM designation G83-83, a crossed-cylinder metal-to-metal test. The abrasion resistance was determined in a loop tester in which abrasive film configured in a continuous loop was abraded against the coatings. It was determined that the Ti(C,N) coating is harder than the TiN coating. The abrasion test demonstrates that the abrasion resistance of Ti(C,N) coating is superior to that of TiN, but the coating versus metal wear resistance is dependent upon the experimental conditions.

First, per-packet Relative One-way Trip Time (ROTT) of a UDP stream at a receiver on the Internet is investigated extensively, and it is found that spikes with successive plots, which we call spike-trains, often appear on a time-ROTT graph. Also, congestion-related losses are found to be strongly correlated only to the spike-trains and the path status is eectively identied by such spike-trains. Based on these observations, a rate control with moderate fairness using the path-status, PAth-STatus-based RAte control (PASTRA), is presented. The eectiveness of PASTRA in achieving moderate fairness for UDP streams on the Internet is demonstrated.

Applications in such system may offer different quality levels (such as higher or lower frame rates for a video conferencing application) across multiple factors or dimensions (such as frame rate, resolution). The end-user derives different degrees of satisfaction (known as utility) from these quality levels.

After cleaning, Si wafers are characterized by attenuated total reflection-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR) and atomic force microscropy (AFM). In UV/O3 cleaning, the exposure time to reach the detection limit for organic contaminants in ATR-FTIR is about 10 min and the RMS surface roughness reduces with increasing exposure time. In ECR hydrogen plasma cleaning, the RMS surface roughness reduces significantly with increasing the exposure time but the removal of organic contaminants from the silicon wafer is not very effective. In ECR oxygen plasma cleaning, the exposure times to reach both the detection limit and the lowest RMS roughness are 40 and 10 s, respectively, and the optimum exposure time is suggested to be 30–40 s, considering both the effects of cleaning and surface roughening. Therefore, dry cleaning using ECR oxygen plasma seems to be more effective than that using ECR hydrogen plasma or the UV/O3 cleaning for the removal of organic contaminants. Also, the removal mechanisms of the organic contaminants in UV/O3 and ECR plasma cleanings are discussed in detail.

However, this response must be tightly regulated because unrestrained TLR signaling generates a chronic inflammatory milieu that often leads to autoimmunity. We have found that the TAM receptor tyrosine kinases-Tyro3, Axl, and Mer-broadly inhibit both TLR and TLR-induced cytokinereceptor cascades. Remarkably, TAM inhibition of inflammation is transduced through an essential stimulator of inflammation-the type I interferon receptor (IFNAR)-and its associated transcription factor STAT1. TLR induction of IFNAR-STAT1 signaling upregulates the TAM system, which in turn usurps the IFNAR-STAT1 cassette to induce the cytokine and TLR suppressors SOCS1 and SOCS3. These results illuminate a self-regulating cycle of inflammation, in which the obligatory, cytokine-dependent activation of TAM signaling hijacks a proinflammatory pathway to provide an intrinsic feedback inhibitor of both TLR-and cytokine-driven immune responses.

The discussion is restricted to two-dimensional domains where the generated Voronoi diagram partitions the domain into irregular covex poylgons. This paper forms a sequel to an earlier paper on mesh generation using Dirichlet tessellation techniques by Ghosh and Mukhopadhyay. Two formulations have been developed, considering possible different situations. The first can be easily applicable to the analysis of structured materials that are modeled by a set of isolated material points in a continuum. The second formulation can find use in problems of finite deformation problems, where tessellation may be used as a means of obtaining a natural Lagrangian discretization of a deforming medium to avoid problems associated with mesh distortion.
