Ayurved has a long and strong heritage of use of poly herbal drugs and formulations to treat various diseases. Saraswatarishta is one of the most commonly practiced Medhya Rasayana (Cognition enhancer), which is known to improve total mental ability. The current study was aimed to evaluate variation in physicochemical characters of Saraswatarishta if any and its comparative free-radical scavenging potential as a result of pre – sterilization. Among all the four batches, total reducing sugar decreased whereas the alcohol content increased with duration of fermentation. Fresh flowers of Woodfordiafruticosa against dried flowers has shown to enhance the fermentation process. In vitro biochemical assays showed variable total phenol content (NDF: 2.94; NFF: 3.19; SDF: 0.63; SFF: 0.59 mg/g dry mass Gallic acid equivalent). Comparatively higher DPPH free-radical scavenging activity was also ob...

The current study demonstrates the influence of melatonin on ovaprim induced final oocyte maturation and ovulation through the production of 17!, 20"-dihydroxy-4-pregnen- 3-one or MIH, maturing ultimately with formation of MPF. During post-vitellogenic phase, adult female Catla were injected with ovaprim alone or in combination with melatonin at different time intervals. After latency period, the rate of germinal vesicle breakdown (GVBD), a visual marker of final oocyte maturation, in each fish group was determined at microscopic level. Additionally, the rate of formation of maturation promoting factor (MPF), a complex of two proteins (a regulatory component called cyclin B and the catalytic component protein kinase known as cyclin-dependent kinase, Cdk1) were measured following relative densitometry of respective immunoblots. At the end ...

This indole hormone is unique in exhibiting marked day-night variations with a nocturnal peak in both synthesis and release from the pineal gland irrespective of the habit and habitat of the species. Gastrointestinal melatonin has been studied mostly in mammals, but it remains obscure whether gut contributes to diurnal rhythmic profiles of melatonin in circulation. Accordingly, present study aims at localization of melatonin containing cells and measurement of this hormone at four different clock hours (i.e., 12:00h, 18:00h, 24:00h and 06:00h) in a light-dark cycle in different parts of gastrointestinal tract [GIT] for the first time in carp Catla catla as a representative of any fish. Immunohistochemical study reveals the presence of melatonin containing cells throughout the carp GIT. However, relative abundance of ...

Hence naturally occurring anti-oxidant rich-herbs play a vital role in combating these conditions. The present study was carried out to investigate the in vitro free-radical quenching capacity of a known Ayurvedic poly-herbal formulation called Vayasthapana Rasayana. Methods Methanol extracts of Vayasthapana Rasayana formulation (VRF) were studied for in vitro total antioxidant activity along with phenolic content and reducing power. In vitro assays like DPPH, FRAP, ABTS scavenging to evaluate radical quenching potential were performed. Results The formulation has shown 94% at 0.1 mg/ml DPPH free-radical scavenging activity as against 84% at 0.1 mg/ml for standard ascorbic acid (IC50 value 5.51 μg/ml for VRF and 39 μg/ml for standard). It has a significant higher ferric reducing potential also (OD 0.87 at...
