The novel clearly shows the poet's preoccupations with the kind of nationalism that was emerging at home and abroad. The dangers of nationalism had already manifested before the First World War. The Home and the World, English translation of Ghare Baire generated considerable discussions and debate over its message when published in Europe in 1921.

The study used library research by analysing the impact of printing press, public education, and freedom of expression emergences toward literary activities in Portuguese colonies in Africa. In this regard ethnological and historical studies on the colonies had an important role to play for the later development of nationalism among the colonised African peoples. Article's discussion concerned with describing proper literary activities in Portuguese began in the Lusophone countries of Africa, poetry characterization by the "black" and "white" presentations, added by some example of poetries. It can be concluded the problematic of colour is present in African poems in Portuguese right from its inception, The common purpose of the nineteenth century Lusophone African poets was to discover the regional cultural history and identity, which was denied to them for centuries by the foreign rulers.

Portugal used its language for political and spiritual subjugation of the peoples of Asia, Africa and America. The Church and the Crown worked together in Goa to Lusitanise its inhabitants. Decrees were issued by the Church and the Goan Councils prohibiting the use of Konkani in public and private. Both Catholics and Hindus were punished for speaking and reading in their mother tongues. Due to the faulty and narrow language policies of the Portuguese government, neither Portuguese was accepted by the people nor did Konkani grow freely. After four hundred and fifty years of Lusitanisation, barely 2 % of the Goan population spoke Portuguese.

We then lived in a small old house near College Square in Calcutta. One day at the breakfast table, one of our elder brothers instructed me and another brother to meet him in a particular room of the house. Sensing threat of mild nature, we hesitated lest we were party to some mischief for which he was known in the house. Still, we followed his instructions willy-nilly, and appeared at the designated room immediately after breakfast. "Come in. Stupid, so late! " he said. He was there holding a big piece of white cloth in one hand and a pair of scissors in another. His voice dropped to a whisper to order us to hold the cloth tightly from two sides. We held the cloth, while he quickly cut out a piece from it. A broken cup, half-full of some red liquid (now, I know it was alta, a lac extract with which Bengali women used to decorate their soles) was already hidden in the room under an almirah. It was swiftly taken out by him. He was muttering several instructions to us; we followed all without questioning. He dipped the cloth into the cup and took it out after some moments. It was all red now. I thought he was making a kite or preparing for his magic-show (he knew magic-tricks to vanish a mango or a chocolate from the table before our open eyes). With the wet red cloth, he surreptitiously slipped out from the room and went up to the rooftop. The rooftop was a forbidden area of the house for us. We waited for him, and after some time, he returned attaching a stick to that red cloth, now completely dry. Each moment we passed was thrilling for us. It was time for father to leave for college for his classes. My brother anxiously waited for sound of the heavy wooden main-door of our house closing. At last, the sound was heard. It signalled freedom for him. We were again ordered to follow him as he would march holding the stick with the red cloth, now a red flag. He was already neatly dressed in shorts, half-shirt tucked in, hair combed over in albot (from Prince Albert's) style and wearing his black school shoes. I remember I was barefooted. He started saying something at the top of his voice and repeatedly with the red flag in hand. "Shout with me, or you will see…," said he rolling his eyes. So we did. Nothing was comprehensible for me, nothing I remember of what he said that day, except a word "Chou Enlai." The word would echo in my ears for many a year, perhaps for its outlandish flavour. Then the march started and continued from upstairs to downstairs and then downstairs to upstairs several times. We at last stopped at the tiny terrace in the upstairs where there were some flower pots. My brother, the self-proclaimed leader of the day, swiftly stuck the red flag in one of the flower pots, and with an elegant sleight of his hand, brought a matchbox into his hand. We wondered how he had got a matchbox, the same Tekka Marka (Ace brand)! Stolen from the kitchen? Wearing a very strange smile, he looked at us for a few seconds, and then lighting a matchstick he held it under the red flag. A few seconds and there was only a half-burnt smoking staff still stuck in the flower pot. My brother had disappeared, we two stood there half-dazed, trying to understand what he had done. In my ears only echoed, "Chou Enlai", "Chou Enlai".... Some days after this incident, one morning a cousin of ours appeared in our house with a kitbag and some rolled colour papers under his arm. While taking a cup of tea, he took out a box of pastel colour pencils from his bag and set to write something in English on those colour papers. Sovon Sanyal 1 | Page
