Technology, Users and Uses: Ethics and Human Interaction through Technology and AI, 2023

This leads to the finding that true artificial intelligence (AI) is or has to be directly related to an artificial morality. That link already exists since the Turing test (TT) is, at its core, a moral test. These premises are especially important today because of the "mechanization" of humans˙ a state we are involved in. Machines are setting the regulatory framework of interaction with people. In this way, they "mechanize" them, with the encouragement of their, already initiated, fellow humans. Furthermore, AIbased systems acquire a moral dimension that is often overlooked and could lead to challenging situations. As to what criteria should be used to determine artificial moral behaviour, there is a phenomenological aspect behind them. What most people believe, is what is most likely to lead to an "intuitive algorithm". An algorithm corresponding to human intuitions, outside strict normative standards, that may lead to artificial autonomy and moral conduct. This kind of system that would have succeed in passing the TT will be the one that has already programmed humans in such a way that we will accept it as a (disguised) member of our species.

For, after all, what is man in nature? A nothing in comparison with the infinite, an absolute in comparison with nothing, a central point between nothing and all. Infinitely far from understanding these extremes, the end of things and their beginning are hopelessly hidden from him in an impenetrable secret.

Data management in public administration and large organizations requires policies and procedures... more Data management in public administration and large organizations requires policies and procedures that enable the proper use and preservation of digital archival documents. New ways of information affect the governance of citizens in modern democracies, and therefore the effective functioning of institutions and organizations in the digital environment is essential. Organizing, describing, clearing, and maintaining records is vital to effective data management. By examining recent developments in data management practices, this article offers insights and recommendations for organizations striving to optimize their data governance strategies. Effective data management in public administration and large organizations contributes to enhanced decision-making, transparency, accountability, and citizen engagement. The article underscores the importance of data governance frameworks, data classification, access and security policies, data quality assurance, and retention procedures through a comprehensive review and analysis of existing literature, regulations, and case studies related to data management in public administration and large organizations. The study draws insights from scholarly articles, government reports, and industry publications to understand current trends, challenges, and best practices in data governance.

Following this line of thought, two aspects of freedom are raised: the freedom of the athlete, and the freedom of the scientist. These two aspects are discussed within a moral framework, in particular that of moral relativism. For the first question, based on the theory, the athlete may consider that there is no absolute truth about doping, such as e.g. that it is wrong and not beneficial for sports, athletes, etc. The morally rightness of doping depends on the moral character of each athlete and/or the association, the country she/he represents. For the second question, one might consider that research in the field in question is not morally wrong. By investigating the properties of various substances we could be led ...

A first question that arises is whether doping falls within the athlete's freedom to do what they can to enhance their performance. After all there is non-equality in athletes’ physical state and drugs could be understood as another way of its enhancement in the same way that natural ways do that through training, lifting weights, etc. A second issue arising is whether or not is necessary to put limits on the research concerning these substances. So, two aspects of freedom are raised: (a) the freedom of the athlete, and (b) the freedom of the scientist. In this paper, these two sides are discussed on the basis of the theory of Moral Relativism. According to Moral Relativism the truth or justification of moral judgments is not absolute, but relative to the moral standard of a person or group. For (a) based on the theory, the athlete may consider that there is no absolute truth about doping, such as e.g., that ...

Moreover, several worries have arisen in the field of dataset collection and intellectual property in that many datasets may exist without the license of the respective owners. Triple-Entry Accounting (TEA) has been proposed by Ian Grigg to increase transparency, accountability, and security in financial transactions. This method expands upon the traditional double-entry accounting system, which records transactions as debits and credits in two separate ledgers, by incorporating a third ledger as an independent verifier via a digitally signed receipt. The utilization of a digital signature provides evidentiary power to the receipt, thus reducing the accounting problem to one o...

It presents a qualitative analysis of the advertisements that were part of the coronavirus campaigns “Stay at home” and “Stay safe”, from March to June 2020. The analysis is based on semiotic and communication models. The aim of the research is to find out to what extend those advertising spots shaped the new daily life of the citizens, acting either informatively or instructively. Findings indicate that the campaign adapted to the needs of an already tired public. Furthermore, those specific social ads neither did they meet the expectations, nor resulted as expected, reproducing mostly stereotypes. They eventually did not innovate, express better ideas nor effectively communicate the intended message without provoking, distracting from the central objective or raising debate for all the wrong reasons.

This is because the latter depend also on the observer. Virtual reality (VR) models are environments that address the senses and therefore belong to the apparent space. Therefore, they seem to prevent an epistemic justification. Based on that, this paper discusses VR technology’s potential to provide knowledge of external reality to students. This is particularly important in light of the conditions imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic, which have led to an increasingly significant role of VR related technologies in education. The research question of this study is whether VR models being used as educational tools, bring us closer – or not – to knowing the properties of physical objects. The main focus of this epistemic investigation is Russell’s theory of perception with an emphasis to the concept of space. Analysis indicates that VR is educationally useful especially wh...

Today, due to the pandemic but mainly because of Information Communication Technologies (ICT) and the Fourth Industrial Revolution, there is an increase in online communication within corporate organizations (via emails, teleconferencing, etc.). In this new context, managers, CEOs and company leaders are developing digital behaviors. Online and electronic communication has largely replaced in person and a leader or e-leader should cultivate and use her virtues within a new digital environment. In this context, can we refer to emerging “digital virtues” or is the technological factor too “weak” to disturb the nature of these character traits? In order to address this question, this paper investigates four Aristotelian virtues that lie at the heart of an ethical corporate leader, i.e. “prudence/practical wisdom”, “fortitude” (courage), “temperance”, and “justice”....

According to Aristotle and his virtue ethics theory, humans succeed the mean when they acknowledge in what they are physically inclined to. If someone knows towards where she is deviating, either in terms of exaggeration or understatement, then she can, at some point, achieve the mean as the end goal of ethical virtue. But what if these moral evaluations refer to collective processes, such as politics, culture and religion? In this case, the notion of “intermediate” could be paralleled with the notion of ‘optimized’. A way of locating the optimized point on the political or cultural public sphere is to acknowledge in what people are politically or culturally inclined to. This seems to be guided by their cultural traditions, political history and aims. In politics and modern democracies, the doctrine may be applied in virtues, such as justice. Excess in the administration of just...

The present study constitutes a first step toward filling this void in the literature by providing empirical evidence on the representation of female students and female faculty members in Greek universities' departments of philosophy. Our findings indicate that the underrepresentation of female students in philosophy is not a universal phenomenon, since female students constitute the majority of philosophy students in Greece at both the undergraduate and the graduate levels. However, our findings also suggest that the low number of women in philosophy at the faculty level is not a problem unique to Anglophone philosophy, since female faculty members comprise, on average, only 29% of philosophy faculty members in Greece. In order to explain these findings, we argue, first, that the teaching of phil...

The extent of this transition from pre-instructional conceptions to textbook formulations has been investigated through the use of a new questionnaire. Findings indicate that generally, students retain their pre-theoretical understanding of these terms. Within this framework, some formal definitions are closer to common sense (e.g. ‘ethics’) and some others aren’t (e.g. ‘knowledge’). Furthermore, the role of intuitions in this process is been evaluated, leading to the ascertainment that previous philosophical encounters seem to play a crucial role in determining actual understanding.

Engineering ethics can be discussed based on the nature of the engineer profession and its implications for professional morality. This paper takes the virtue ethics lens to discuss engineering ethics and argues that, since human and social good derives from professional virtues, protecting the public interest is a professional virtue of engineers. Further, since the protection of the public interest redounds to human and social good, then engineers are bound by the nature of their professional role to achieve these two interconnected aims, namely, protecting the public interest and promoting human good. The importance of virtues is eminent in the way an engineer improves her professional conduct and this has an impact on the social environment and on human good in general. Given an engineer’s concern with the broad public needs of people, the engineer’s function counts as a mor...
