Many ideals were constructed according to different social, cultural and political contexts. Internationally, masculinity has fast become a scholarly endeavor in academic circles. However, Bulgarian media and university environment are still full of politically incorrect language. In the last decade some traditional notions of masculinity were strongly publicized and they are part even of the university environment. Moreover, gender history or history of masculinity was not present in the curriculum of my department. This paper is based on the record of teaching and learning in my course "Masculinity in Bulgarian Politics 1879-1944" created and taught during the academic years 2004-2005. It is going to make an attempt at some contextual analyses how and to what extent this course change students' vision of society, their thinking on gender issues and their vision of masculinity as a phenomenon in historical and contemporary perspective.

Especially important was the revival and even the enforcement of an openly racial thought and a racial approach not that typical in the Bulgarian past. This study relies on a wide scope of primary sources such as references from newspapers and journals, various memoirs, parliamentary debates, political speeches, historical studies, popular historical notions and descriptions, studies in the field of physical anthropology, historical accounts, etc. All these are used to investigate the political instrumentalization of the quest for origins (Slavic, Old Bulgar, Turkic, Tartar, Aryan etc.) in "fin-de-siecle" Bulgaria. The book will be of interest for different specialists in humanities and social sciences working on modern and contemporary problems as well as those working on issues related to earlier periods.

Although diet is an important risk factor, traditional eating habits in this region have not yet been explored. This analysis assessed the relationship between traditional dietary pattern and mortality from all-causes, CVD and cancer in Eastern European cohorts. Methods Data from the Health, Alcohol and Psychosocial factors in Eastern Europe prospective cohort were used, including participants from Russia, Poland and the Czech Republic. Based on food frequency questionnaire data, we constructed an Eastern European diet score (EEDS) from nine food groups which can be considered as traditional in this region. The relationship between categorical (low, moderate, high) and continuous (range 0-18) EEDS and mortality was estimated with Cox-regression. Results From 18,852 eligible participants, 2234 died during follow-up. In multivariable adjusted models, participants with high adherence to the traditional Eastern European diet had significantly higher risk of all-cause (HR 1.23; 95% CI 1.08-1.42) and CVD (1.34; 1.08-1.66) deaths compared to those with low adherence. The association with cancer mortality was only significant in Poland (high vs. low EEDS: 1.41; 1.00-1.98). From the specific EEDS components, high consumption of lard was significantly positively related to all three mortality outcomes, while preserved fruit and vegetable consumption showed consistent inverse associations. Conclusion Our results suggest that traditional eating habits may contribute to the poor health status, particularly the high CVD mortality rates, of populations in Eastern Europe. Adequate public health nutritional interventions in this region are essential.

In the subsequent periods it will invariably keep this position which will establish a link between the last decades under the Ottoman rule, the period of the modern Bulgarian state until September 9th 1944, the times of the communist regime and the transition after November 10th 1989. Due to the gardening Bulgarians do abroad, as well as the wide use of the chilies in the kitchen, the culinary symbol becomes strong for both, foreigners and Bulgarians themselves. It also shows how the pungent occurs in some parts of Bulgaria just at the end of the 18th and in first decades of the 19th century, and becomes widely spread in the middle and the second half of the 19th century. Thanks to many it's qualities and characteristics, as well as due to the variety of the ways it can be used, the pepper remains a constant symbol of Bulgaria (adopted not only at different social levels, but also in different periods and culinary contexts) and part of the experience of the national identity amongst the specialists in it cultivation. Feasibility and sustainability of the pepper or chili as national symbols shows in their presence in two different dishes, which are for both-consumers and nutrition and cooking specialist, expression of two different culinary philosophies-the beans and "shopska salad".

From Kebab to Ćevapčići. Foodways in (Post-)Ottoman Europe, 2018

From Kebab to Ćevapčići aims at giving disciplinarily inclusive insights into the culinary histories of “Ottoman Europe” – of the European territories and people(s), including Turkey, shaped by or “coping” with an Ottoman heritage. The analysis of foodways, the changing practices related to food production, distribution and consumption, the way food and foodways were imagined and described, serve as a means to better understand the historical entanglement of this area into global flows, the local appropriation of new foodstuffs and recipes, the imagination of exclusive possession, and the negotiation or maintenance of difference. The volume assembles 16 essays, most of which were originally delivered as papers at a conference held at Justus-Liebig-University, Gießen/Germany in fall of 2015. Their authors come from various scholarly traditions touching in one way or another the histories of the people(s) who used to live within or at the borders of the Ottoman sultan’s imperial shade.
