Based on clinical-psychology models of client-therapist matching and cultural competency, we hypothesized that willingness to seek treatment among military personnel is higher when the potential psychotherapist is a discharged veteran. Seventy-seven military personnel (73% men, 70% White, = 34.2) took part in the study. As hypothesized, the majority of participants indicated that they would prefer to see a psychologist who is a veteran. When responding to vignettes, ratings of the psychotherapist's ability to understand the client (a soldier post-deployment), of his ability to help such a client, and of whether the client should seek treatment from this psychotherapist were higher when the psychotherapist was a veteran compared to when he had no military experience. There were no between-group differences in age, years of ser...

The Marlowe-Crowne Social Desirability scale (MCSD) was tested as a predictor of self-disclosure for institutionalized psychotic patients. It was anticipated that using the MCSD, would enable the prediction of self-disclosure, and that moderately high MCSD Ss would respond to group therapy with greater disclosure than extremely high Ss. 24 acute good premorbid adult males randomly divided into 4 groups served as Ss. Videotapes of the 4 were rated. A trichotomous division of MCSD scoring was found to allow more accurate prediction, and patients who were moderately approval dependent emitted more personal information than patients who were highly dependent.
