It discusses the presumption that Christians interpret Scripture theologically to improve their prospects of living and worshipping faithfully before the Triune God, and links this presumption to arguments about the doctrine of Scripture and the place of Scripture in God’s drama of salvation. It also looks at the role of Scripture in God’s economy of salvation and considers letters attributed to Paul. After providing an overview of Pauline theology and theological interpretation of Paul, the article talks about Paul as interpreter of Scripture as well as his trinitarianism. It also comments on Paul’s particular theological and ecclesiological concerns over relationships between Jews and Gentiles in Christ, and how such concerns shape and are shaped by his convictions about God, Christ, and the Spirit.

Bieler and Schottroff fire up our hearts with their stories, expand our imagination with their biblical interpretations, and broaden our theological reasoning. There, at the welcoming table of Christ, we practice our lives together, we transform the world, and hope for resurrection—the resurrection of the body of Christ, and the resurrection of our own bodies.

Briefly put in charge of the laundry, he is soon relieved of his duties after giving all the clothing and linen away. He seems to have been especially fond of the mice, frogs, and weeds with which he shared his hermitage. Although sometimes disregarding fasts, he could impose three hundred reverences to the ground as penitence for one monk who ate three slices of sausage and who had come to him especially in the hope of getting let off. In one respect, Isidore differs significantly from Zosima. Whereas, in one of the key moments of The Brothers Karamazov, Zosima's body begins to rot, defying expectations that his sanctity would be acknowledged by a divine miracle, Isidore's corpse is more than usually beautiful with 'the beauty of the sabbath' (p. 219). In accordance with Florensky's own 'spiritual' understanding of the miraculous, there is no question of any breach in the laws of nature, but there isas there is not for even Zosima's closest disciplesassurance of divine favor, visible in the radiant features of the deceased Starets. In Florensky's sacramental universe, grace shines through. If the underlying intellectual problems with which we see Florensky wrestling in these years are essentially similar to those engaging Western scholars in that same first decade of the twentieth century, the lives of Archimandrite Serapion and Starets Isidore give credence to the view that what is going on here is something exotically Russian and it seems true that even the Franciscans might have had difficulty accommodating such extraordinary figures. And, of course, Florensky's own fate was a very Russian fate. We cannot, and probably should not want to, abstract a thinker from the concrete circumstances of his time and place, but it is important also to look to the questions that, nevertheless, make the enterprise of thinking about God in, with, and under the conditions of modernity an essentially global one.

By contrast, a graphic concordance makes no attempt to analyze the form as it occurs in the text. Instead, words are listed according to the first letter that occurs, whether that is a preformative, an inseparable preposition, the definite article, a conjunction, or the first letter of the lexical form of the word. Although the editors describe this manner of organization as "neutral" and "nonintrusive," I would describe it as maddeningly frustrating. To look up occurrences of yom ("day"), one has to look up bywm, hywm, ywm, /cywm, lywm, mywm, plus ymy, and ymym with all their inseparable prefixes. Moreover, yamim = seas is not separated from yamim = days. Trying to locate all the occurrences of a verb is almost certain to produce inaccurate results. Why would anyone produce a graphic concordance? Conceivably, it would be of use in restoring broken texts, where only the first part of a word is preserved. One thinks of Kuhn's Riicklaufiges Hebriiisches Worterbuch, which served an analogous function. But surely, that is not what most scholars need in a concordance. I suspect that the Graphic Concordance was produced because it would be produced easily and quickly through the manipulation of the text base by computer. Most scholars, however, will not want to spend $150.00 for a work of such limited value. More encouragingly, the editors' careful and cautious judgments with the text itself suggests that the forthcoming analytical concordance will be a genuinely useful volume.

In a context where the church had become overwhelmingly, if not exclusively, Gentile, the Christian community needed to be reminded of the priority of Israel and the astonishing work of reconciliation that God willed to accomplish in the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. This new volume in the highly acclaimed New Testament Library series reveals the great theological promises of Ephesians while discussing issues of context, authorship, and style.

The worship of these gods is strictly prohibited in Judaism, Christianity and Islam. This practice is generally referred to as idolatry. In addition, the making of images of the one God along with the use of such images in worship is also considered idolatry within these three monotheistic faiths. In the ancient societies within which Judaism, Christianity and, later, Islam emerged, almost all aspects of life were touched by the presence of idols. For a Jew (particularly in the diaspora) or a Christian to faithfully negotiate one’s way through the activities of daily life in such a world required sustained attentiveness and resolve. Over time, idolatry became more generally and metaphorically associated with ideas, motivations, beliefs and commitments that draw believers’ attention away from God. In some instances in Chris...
