We reviewed patients treated during 10 years period (from 1992 to 2002). Analysed group consisted of 14 patients. Reasons for hospitalisation were swallowing problems in 6 patients, neuroleptic malignant syndrome (NMS) in 3 patients, stroke in 2 patients, bolus choking in 2 patients, and speech disturbance in 1 patient. Working diagnosis for most of our patients was neurological disease, yet only later D-IMD diagnosis was established excluding primary neurological disease, or as associated disease to basic neurological disorder. Nine patients have diagnosed as Parkinson syndrome, 3 patients as NMS, and 4 as orolingual dyskinesia, either autonomously, or in combination with Parkinson syndrome. D-IMD was most frequently caused by neuroleptics. Thus the small number of patients hospitalised regarding this syndrome on Department of Neuro...

Research paper thumbnail of Lumbosacral radiculopathy--factors effects on it's severity

Patients were categorised on bases of their BMI (body mass index), sex, age, job type (physical or intellectual job), and chronic diseases (diabetes mellitus, arterial hypertension and hyperlipidemia). Data were evaluated using the chi2 test with the significance of p < 0.05. Obese patients had severe radiculopathy more often than non-obese patients (p < 0.044). Severe radiculopathy appeared more frequently in male (p < 0.001), elderly patients (p < 0.023), and patients doing physically intensive jobs (p < 0.002). No statistic significance was found in relationship between patients suffering from diabetes mellitus, arterial hypertension, and hyperlipidemia, and the severity of lumbosacral radiculopathy. Obese patients, males, elderly patients, and patients doing physically intensive jobs are at a bigger risk of su...

Her complaints began 6 months before with sensory and painful sensations, sphincter impairment, and motor events (spastic tetraparesis, more pronounced on the left extremities). Magnetic resonance of the head revealed a rounded tumor of 2.5 cm in diameter, by its characteristics corresponding to meningioma, at the level of C1 vertebra and craniocervical junction, with the base at spinal canal anterior wall, occupying most of the craniocervical junction, compressing spinal cord and medulla oblongata. Intracerebral computed tomography angiography showed spared lumen and a satisfactory image of vertebral arteries bypassing the expansive growth at the occipital foramen, confirming slow tumor growth. Antiedematous therapy led to transient improvement in extremity strength and partial recovery of neurologic deficit, which resolved completely upon neurosurgical operation and rehabilitation. T...

Deficiency of vitamin B12 also causes megaloblastic anaemia, meaning that the red blood cells are usually larger than normal. In this paper we report a 16-year old girl who was referred to us for the evaluation of mild paraparesis and paresthesias marked by

Objective: To investigate incidence of sleep disturbances in patients with idiopathic PD and to evaluate what kind of sleep disturbance influence most on the quality of the sleep. Patients and methods: We analysed 104 PD patients treated in the University Hospital Centre Osijek and General Hospital Nasice. All patients were asked if they have sleep disturbance or not. To evaluate sleep disturbances we used Parkinson Disease Sleep Scale ( PDSS). Results: sleep disturbance reported 58,7% patients, while 41,3% had not sleep disturbance. In group of patients reported not to have sleep disturbance total PDSS score was 104.4, while in group that have sleep disturbance score was 87,7. We found statisticaly significant difference between two groups of patients on this items, nocturnal awakening ( t= -2,869; p<0,005), disstresing halucinations (t= -1,956; p<0,05), tremor on waking (t= +2,135; p<0,05) and mornig tiredness (t= -2,494; p<0,01 ). Conclusion: Among sleep disturbances nocturnal awakening, restlessness, disstresing halucinations, tremor on waking and morning tiredness influence most on the quality of sleep in patients with Parkinson Disease.

Clinical presentation can be variable but some distinctive symptoms are headaches, cranial nerve disruptions, weakness in upper and lower limbs and seizures. It usually affects younger or middle-aged people, especially women. This is a case report about a 34-year-old female patient, who had come to an emergency neurological clinic, after suffering a cerebral convulsive attack of grand mal type, diplopia and dizziness. Neurological examination only revealed the lesion symptoms of the left abducent nerve with dysmetria of the left arm. The remaining clinical presentation was normal. The patient confirmed pregnancy two weeks prior to hospital treatment and, at the same time, she complained about pain sensations in her left ear. The urgent magnetic resonance ( MR ) of the brain was done and revealed the multiple thrombosis of venous sinus and inflammation in the mastoid part of the left temporal bone. The patient underwent full d...
