By reducing or suspending elective surgery, they aimed to maximize existing resources to deal with patients with COVID-19. However, the delay and/or termination of elective surgery created additional problems, both for patients and the healthcare system. Discontinuation of elective surgery can cause a risk of a backlog; increasing patient morbidity and mortality; poorer quality of life; affecting finances and hospital resources, as well as training and research programs. Based on all these considerations, elective surgery during the COVID-19 pandemic must be restarted with several requirements and provisions, which provide safety for the patients as well as the healthcare workers.
