Drawing on three case studies conducted in the Indo-Gangetic Plains, covering Nepal, Bangladesh, and the Indian state of Punjab, this article analyzes agricultural adaptation practices to climate change. In particular, we examine how farmers and other agricultural actors understand and respond to climate change. We identify a variety of adaptation practices related to changes in cropping system, technological innovations, and institutional changes. We also explore key challenges related to such emerging adaptive innovation processes in the region.

This need has been recognized by many scholars and articulated in several workshops and conferences. Though a few attempts have been made over the past four decades to revise the curriculum, it has remained more or less static. Though there have been extension-relevant advances in the fields of communication, sociology, psychology, management, innovation studies, and social science research methods, they are yet to find a place in the extension curriculum. Consequently, due to the lack of essential extension competencies, agriculture graduates in general and those with MSc and PhD in agricultural extension in particular face challenges in finding appropriate jobs.

While extension can and should play a much wider role in engaging with these issues, its performance remains restricted to the traditional one of technology dissemination. Fresh theoretical perspectives on the nature of innovation and appropriate institutional reform are opening up new vistas for extension. But the implementation of many of these necessary changes is hampered by outmoded understanding of its role and function, lack of partnerships among the different actors, limited expertise and lack of an explicit agenda on institutional learning.
