Through cinematic reflections & popular discourse of its cinematic space, Bollywood and Bombay/Mumbai remained a popular theme. Bollywood displayed Mumbai (Bombay) as city of contradiction, poor vs rich, deprived vs privileged and its enormous depth for struggle for commoners, crimes and violence. The present discourse will examine Mumbai, its urban space and its urban informality through the lens of cinematic space of Bollywood cinema. The present narrative would like to highlight a tradition of Indian Hindi movies where Mumbai/Bombay captured the central space for storylines. Several aspects of Mumbai’s urban narratives like poverty, dingy space, urban slum culture, subculture and violence, poor governance have been visualized. Methodologically, the paper seeks to demonstrate separate realms of Bollywood cinema that may provide a wider socio, politico-cultural lens. Lens through which urban space, urban in...

Further, observational analysis post closure of tea gardens would be included to substantiate trend analysis from a feminists’ scholarship. It attempts to develop a theoretical discourse subsequently a tangible feminist framework keeping the gender-labour and displacement-livelihood issues at center space of the thematic dialogue. HIGHLIGHTS m Chronic closure of tea gardens in north Bengal has led to emergence of 'women underclass' , a gendered impact of closure and displacement process. m Absence of active participation in Trade unions for women workers led to 'identity crisis and marginalization' post closure of tea gardens.

It analyses beggary from a developmental perspective and as an inevitable outcome of exploitation and criminalisation of poor under the vicious force of political economy. The present discourse further explores the possible solutions to deal with beggary under the existing Beggary Laws, the role of NGOs and of Civil Society.

It highlights the fact that prior to the sixties, activities of criminals were confined to thefts of goods from the seaport or other conventional crimes, without much severity. It was during the mid-sixties that with the low profile of Indian economy and produced goods of low quality, smuggling of foreign goods attracted the organised crime. Low time criminals took to bootlegging (due to the ban on liquor that time) and smuggling of goods. Once commercial activities in the city grew, they brought with them the property crimes. Since the seventies, Mumbai witnessed the creation of huge wealth by businessmen by fair and foul means. The period also coincided with the growth of real estate for profiteering and speculation. As another aspect of its growth, the city experienced a flood of migrants (from within the state and from...

The physical impression of women body has been used to sell several consumer products, viz., food to floors, from creams to cars, from perfume to popcorn. The standards of beauty being imposed on women by external sources are much debated and complicated process and need to be understood within the age old socio-culturally milieu. In addition, the political economy of 'women image' and its commercial exploitation by selling and purchasing 'beauty' and consumption of it also requires serious attention. Hence, a theoretical discourse is developed being based on content analysis to cross-examine the representation of women around the patriarchic cultural notion of 'beauty' and its commoditization in commercial space through media. The paper further explores the social dynamics of 'female body' and reconstruction of 'femaleness' through socio-cultural process of 'gendering' and 'popular media'. The discourse revolves around how and whether the 'reconstruction of female body' could be dissected in search of 'real image ('Changing the 'image of beauty' in real sphere of womens' life and life style) of a woman' with a special focus on Indian society.

Entrepreneurship of women and development of microenterprises can be viewed within this entitlement-capability framework, as an appropriate strategy for expanding entitlements and mitigating the feminisation of poverty. Sen, (1983: 754) and feminist economists like, Lucas and Agarwal (1999) have opined that the deficiency of traditional development economics was its failure to focus on 'entitlements' of people and the 'capabilities' these entitlements generate. Economic development is a process of expanding people's capabilities and derivatively economic development can also be viewed in terms of an expansion of entitlements. Entitlements are the alternative bundles of commodities a person can command within society and also through using one's full rights and opportunities. Overall, entitlement i...

Media insinuates its messages into our consciousness, many of which perpetuate unrealistic, stereotypical, and limit perceptions, e.g., women images. Gender stereotyping in media, where women are under-represented, that erroneously implies that men are the cultural standard and women are insignificant or indiscernible propagating patriarchic hegemonic ideology. Portrayal of women in media, across the globe, to sell various products to the consumers with a female face or images though the target users /consumers could be male or female both have been rampant leading to gender stereotyping. Women face or body images have been predominant factors to draw attention of the consumers to capture the market because such media imposition of gender stereotyping is believed to ...
