Both sexes of Sprague-Dawley rats were orally administered once at a dose of 2,000 mg/kg in single-dose toxicity or daily for 13 weeks at doses of 500, 1,000 or 2,000 mg/kg in repeated-dose toxicity tests. In single-dose toxicity test to determine dose levels in repeated-dose toxicity study, the body weight gain was suppressed at 2,000 mg/kg, although no death, clinical signs and pathological findings related to the treatment were observed. In repeated-dose toxicity test, there were no clinical signs in animals administered up to 2,000 mg/kg, except one rat died due to a gavage error. In addition, no significant changes in feed consumption and body weight gain were obtained during the treatment period, in spite of week-to-week fluctuation of water consumption. There were no considerable changes in ophthalmoscopy, urinalysis, hematology and serum biochemistry, except a significant decrease in albumin/globulin ratio in males treated with 1,000 mg/kg. In contrast, a significant increase in relative heart weight was observed in both male and female rats treated with a high dose (2,000 mg/kg) of Geranti Bio-Ge Yeast. In microscopic examination, mild lesions were found sporadically in both control and treatment groups in a dose-independent manner. In spite of some alterations in water consumption, serum biochemistry and organ weights, such effects were not considered to include toxicopathological significance, based on the lack of dose-dependency, consistent time-course and gender relationship. Taken together, it is suggested that no observed adverse effect level (NOAEL) of Geranti Bio-Ge Yeast is considered to be over 2,000 mg/kg in rats, and that long-term oral intake in humans might not exert adverse effects.

In the present study, we investigated the mechanisms whereby isothiocyanate sulforaphane (SFN) suppresses STAT3 activation in DU145 prostate cancer cells. SFN significantly inhibited SFN-inhibited STAT3 phosphorylation at Tyr705 as well as the deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) binding capability in electrophoresis mobility shift assay (EMSA) in time- and concentration-dependent manner. SFN also abrogated the Janus activated kinase 2 (JAK2) phosphoraylation. In addition, SFN down-regulated STAT3-related gene products including Bcl-2, Bcl-xL, and cyclin D1 and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), and inhibited the proliferation and induced apoptosis. Moreover, SFN mediated reactive oxygen species (ROS) production at the early time. Overall, these results demonstrate that ROS generation may be involved in the inhibition of JAK2/STAT3 activation and apoptosis in DU145 cells.

Recently, IFN-gamma releasing assay (IGRA) shows promising results for diagnosis of TB. However, little is known about the usefulness of these assays for diagnosing disseminated TB. We therefore evaluated their usefulness compared with traditional tests in patients with disseminated TB. Methods: All adult patients with suspected disseminated TB were prospectively enrolled at a tertiary hospital in an intermediate TB-burden country during a 6-year period. Disseminated TB was defined as the involvement of bone marrow, ≥ 2 noncontiguous organs, or the presence of miliary lung lesions. Results: A total of 101 patients with confirmed and probable disseminated TB were finally analyzed. Of these 101 patients, 52 (52%) were miliary TB and the remaining 49 (48%) were non-miliary disseminated TB. The 29 (29%) patients including 6 HIV patients had immunosuppressive conditions. T-SPOT.TB assay was positive in 90% (91/101). The sensitivity of T-SPOT.TB assay in patients with miliary TB (90%) was similar to that in those with non-miliary TB (90%)(p>0.99). In the subgroup analysis including the 58 patients in whom both QFT-GIT and T-SPOT.TB were available, the sensitivity of QFT-GIT (67%) showed a trend of being lower than that of T-SPOT.TB (90%). Conclusion: T-SPOT.TB assay may be a helpful adjunct test for disseminated TB. Table1. We retrospectively reviewed all paired blood cultures from patients with Hickman catheter in the hematology-oncology ward between January 1997 and December 2008. There were 112 episodes with positive CBC and negative PBC. Nine episodes (8.0%; 95% CI, 3.0-13.1%) led to subsequent BSI within 28 days. Subsequent BSI developed in 6 of 31 episodes (19%) where empiric antibiotics were inappropriate but in 3 of 81 episodes (4%) where empiric antibiotics were appropriate (P = 0.01). Subsequent candidemia (50%, 2 of 4) was more common than subsequent bacteremia (6%, 7 of 108) (P = 0.03). In conclusion, for patients with positive CBC and negative PBC, the overall incidence of subsequent BSI was 8.0%, and inappropriate empiric antibiotics was associated with subsequent BSI.

In the fabrication process, the control of surface charge causes echinoid-like SnO 2 nanoparticles to be formed and uniformly decorated on the graphene. The electrostatic attraction between a graphene nanosheet (GNS) and the echinoid-like SnO 2 particles under controlled pH creates a unique nanostructure in which extremely small SnO 2 particles are uniformly dispersed on the GNS. The SnO 2 /graphene nanocomposite has been shown to perform as a high capacity anode with good cycling behavior in lithium rechargeable batteries. The anode retained a reversible capacity of 634 mA·h·g -1 with a coulombic efficiency of 98% after 50 cycles. The high reversibility can be attributed to the mechanical buffering by the GNS against the large volume change of SnO 2 during delithiation/lithiation reactions. Furthermore, the power capability is significantly enhanced due to the nanostructure, which enables facile electron transport through the GNS and fast delithiation/lithiation reactions within the echinoid-like nano-SnO 2 . The route suggested here for the fabrication of SnO 2 /graphene hybrid materials is a simple economical route for the preparation of other graphene-based hybrid materials which can be employed in many different fields.

The initial stress absorbed by the implant plays a significant role in the success of the immediate loading implants. Materials and Methods: A three-dimensional finite element analysis using Pro-E mechanica finite element software was used to check the stress absorbed by the bone with and without acrylonitrile O-ring. The implant and the mandible where modeled from the data obtained from C.T. scan and optical projector using reverse engineering process. Two different loading conditions of 80 N and 220 N were determined and the analysis was done.
