In this study, Kolb’s learning style inventory was used to identify students’ preferred learning style preferences, and an online module was developed to link prepared advice for the completion of course tasks to particular learning style preferences. Advice was provided for grasping and processing stages of the learning cycle and served as a form of scaffolding through coaching provided via the online module. Data sources used to explore the value of advice specific to learning style preferences included student assessment results from the learning style preference advice module, student reflection journals following use of advice software, and student assignment scores. Data analysis indicated positive effects of advice linked to learning style preferences on student ac...

Patients reporting to an orthopedic clinic for their scheduled appointment for hip pain were given a paper survey consisting of the iHOT12 and the HOS. Demographic information [age, weight, height and body mass index (BMI)] was obtained by chart review. Overall, 114 patients were invited to voluntarily complete the surveys of which 23 declined. Our sample consisted of 91 (57 female and 34 male) patients (80% response rate). The HOS (iHOT12) explained 62% of the variation in iHOT12 (HOS) by using a linear model (Pearson’s correlation(r) is 0.79, P < 0.001). Age, weight, BMI, gender and arthritis did not show a statistically significant predictive power explaining HOS. However, only gender had a ‘statistically’ significant predictive power explaining iHOT12 (P = 0.007). The relationship between the two scores are stronger for male...

This study explored the relationship between shoulder outcome measures (The Disability of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand [DASH], American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons Standard Shoulder Assessment score [ASES], and Constant score) by comparing the best possible scores obtained in an asymptomatic population compared to overall perception of health, as measured by the SF-36 outcome measure. Methods: Volunteers (age range, 20?69 years) with asymptomatic shoulders and no history of shoulder pain, injury, surgery, imaging, or pathology (bilaterally) were included. The DASH and ASES measures were completed by 111 volunteers (72 female, 39 male), of which 92 completed the Constant score (56 female, 36 male). The SF-36 was completed by all volunteers (level of evidence: IV case series). Results: The mean (x) score for ASES measure on the right shoulder was higher for the left-hand dominant side (x...

The concept of directional dependence using copula regression functions has been introduced by Sungur [21]. So we propose a new copula family which incorporates the truncation invariant structure [20] into the generalized Farlie-Gumbel-Morgenstern (FGM) distributions. The directional dependence of the new truncated invariant FGM copulas will be also introduced in this research. We will show that there exists a directional dependence in our truncation invariant FGM copulas using Foreign Currency Exchange Data of the Canadian Dollar (CAD/USD), the Japanese Yen (JPY/USD), and the Korean Won (KRW/USD).

Since copulas provide a deep understanding of the dependence structure by eliminating the effects of the marginals, they play a key role in this study. We define a discretized copula density matrix and decompose it into a set of permutation matrices by using the Birkhoff–von Neumann theorem. This decomposition provides a way to effectively apply the concepts of copulas to solve problems in multivariate statistical data analysis.

As an extension of our efforts to build student interest and ownership in applications, we recently incorporated service learning into our statistics courses. Service learning provides an activelearning experience associated with a community service application. In this article we describe our experiences using service learning in our statistics courses. We give examples of projects used at the University of Minnesota-Morris, a public, liberal arts college.

Research paper thumbnail of Enriching Introductory Statistics Courses Through Community Awareness

In this paper we will present ways in which we have improved our introductory statistics courses ... more In this paper we will present ways in which we have improved our introductory statistics courses by making connections with our community. We focus on three primary approaches: course structure, course content, and bringing in outside contacts and experiences. Changes to course structure include things like course projects and assignments that form an explicit part of the course workload for students. Our discussion of course content will consist of examples we use to illustrate learning objectives through a community connection. We then discuss how we incorporate consulting and other outside contacts to improve our courses. We also discuss student feedback and reactions.

Research paper thumbnail of QSAR of Some Antifungal Benzoxazoles and Oxazolo(4,5-b)pyridines against C. albicans

Quantitative Structure-Activity Relationships, 1991

A congeneric set of 2,5-disubstituted benzoxazole (In) and 2-substituted oxazolo(4,5-b)pyridine (... more A congeneric set of 2,5-disubstituted benzoxazole (In) and 2-substituted oxazolo(4,5-b)pyridine (IV) derivatives 1-46, previously tested for their antifungal activity against C. albicans, were analyzed by quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR) techniques. The activity contributions for either ring system or substituent effects were determined from the correlation equations, and the predictions of the potent antifungally active derivatives were described by the results obtained from the computer-assisted stepwise regression procedure. The resulting QSAR revealed that oxazolo(4,5-b) pyridine ring system was more preferable than benzoxazole and the benzyl group at position 2 was more significant than the corresponding phenyl substituent. Although the para substitution of benzyl or phenyl moiety with electron donating/ withdrawing groups was neglectable, the nature of the substituents at the 5th position (R,) of the fused ring system was important for the potency. Substituting this position with electron withdrawing groups like nitro produces an increase in the antifungal activity.,
