SARS-CoV-2, the seventh virus known to infect the human respiratory system, belongs to the genus Betacoronavirus. It affects the respiratory tract mainly by binding to the ACE-2 receptors chiefly found in lungs and heart. Major countries like the United States, Italy, France, and United Kingdom suffered great loss during the Covid-19 pandemic and large numbers of deaths were reported. At the same time, India too is combating against the virus. Covid-19 arrived in India from the global epicenter Wuhan in late January 2020 when a Kerala student tested positive for the virus. Maharashtra was the worst affected state with maximum number of positive cases and deaths in the country. First death due to Covid-19 occurred in Karnataka state that triggered the alarm of Covid-19 infection. Indian government is taking lots of efforts to control the transmission of the virus that spreads rapidly among humans. Strategies such as self-quarantine, social distancing and 40-days countrywide lockdown helped to slow down the virus which could have spread tremendously otherwise. Our review focuses on the implications of Covid-19 in Indian scenario along with report on active cases, death toll, cured cases, and strategies employed for the pandemic control.

Tubers and seeds of glory lily are rich in colchicine, an alkaloid known to interfere with microtubule polymerization by binding to tubulin, and thus inhibit cell division. Few reports are available pertaining to the reproductive toxicity of Gloriosa superba in female rats but reports on male reproductive toxicity are meagre. The present study was undertaken to establish the role of Gloriosa superba extract in regulation of male reproductive capacity. Oral administration of ethanolic Gloriosa superba tuber extact (GSTE) at doses 20, 40 and 60 mg/kg body weight was found to alter the normal male reproductive physiology, causing significant reduction in cauda epididymal sperm count, ductal sperm motility, and blood testosterone levels. Morphological abnormalities in sperm samples obtained from cauda epididymis of GSTE-treated animals were increased. Fewer females were impregnated by treated males as compared to control ones, and pregnant females delivered fewer pups which indicated reduced rate of conception after insemination. Parallel analysis of hepatic and renal toxicity of the extract revealed no significant dose-related biochemical and structural alterations in these vital organs, which may be an indication of prospect of Gloriosa superba as a source of safe and effective oral contraceptive for males.

However, traditional biochemical assays remain widely popular as simple and reliable methods for qualitative screening of major phytochemical classes present in the extracts of medicinal plants. These chemical reactions are generally universal for all the compounds categorized under a given broad group but do not reveal the individual identities of the reacting entities. Gloriosa superba is a valued medicinal herb, widely distributed in the Western Ghats of India. It is a traditional remedy for a number of health-related issues. Compounds isolated from the plant also hold importance as precursors to many drugs in modern medicine. The present study was undertaken to establish the broad phytochemical composition of leaves, tuberous roots, and seeds of Gloriosa superba from Dharwad region of Karnataka. All parts of the plant were found to contain significantly high levels of alkaloids, followed by polyphenolic compounds including flavonoids and tannins. Carbohydrates and phytosterols were the other major chemical classes present.

(Glory lily), mentioned as Garbhaghatini in ayurvedic texts, is a highly valued medicinal herb traditionally used for a wide range of therapeutic purposes. This study is aimed to investigate the influence of ethanol extract of G. superba tuber (GSTE) on female reproductive function via its effects on implantation and post-implantation embryo survival in Wistar rats (Rattus norvegicus). Pregnant rats were subjected to intragastric administration of GSTE suspended in 1% Tween 80 at doses of 20 and 40 mg/kg body weight for seven days either from gestation day (GD) 1 to GD 7 or from GD 9 to GD 15, following which they were euthanized and the uterine contents examined. GSTE interfered with normal reproductive physiology during pregnancy. Though no significant anti-implantation activity was observed, the extract caused a significant dose-dependent reduction in post-implantation embryo survival and the higher dose of GSTE demonstrated 100% abortifacient activity in rats. The extract exerted these effects through its action on the corpus luteum, subsequently inhibiting progesterone secretion; serum progesterone levels were significantly reduced in treated females on GD 21 compared to the control females. In contrast to a few previous reports, no significant anti-implantation activity was attributable to GSTE. It is concluded that, G. superba tubers possess a strong abortifacient character and may serve as a source for the development of a commercial drug for medical termination of pregnancy.
